I know from experience the bumpers will handle a good bit of weight. I once towed a Bronco with a dead engine probably a mile plus back home. All I used was a logging chain wrapped around his axle tube and secured to the holes on my bumper (not the recovery shackles) Not sure how he was...
For your blinkers I'd check all the small stuff first (bulbs, sockets, fuses, etc.) and start working from there. IMHO this is pretty good advice when working on anything automotive. Also be sure to check the TM (aka -20) You can find it here...
@Barrman thanks for the info. I didn't exactly think it was a good thing when I took it in there the first time and the only person who knew how to align the thing was the old codger that was working there.
I'm starting to think a new set of tires and realignment is in order. Granted, not...
Ok thanks everybody. Didn't want this to become an argument about AV-gas! Thanks for the link to the AV-gas article. This should be required reading before posting on this article. My understanding was most AV-gas was fairly high-octane. I can recall hearing stories from my dad about his days as...
I've been trying to wrap my head around this for a while and I just know the deuce-and-a-half guys are going to pop in here and make me feel like an total idiot.
How is it the multi-fuel M35's can run on just about anything? To me the engines sound like a diesel (can't find a whole bunch of...
Sounds like it should still have the stock TH400. Mine shifts at about the same speed. Oh, by the way, did you buy the truck from a place called Yellowstone Truck Stop? Sounds like you may have bought one I was looking at for a bit 8)
I don't even think you need an oxyacetylene torch. From a list of tools and their uses that was sent to my dad from his buddy:
"Oxyacetylene torch: This device is used almost exclusively to light various objects in your garage on fire. Also useful for igniting the grease inside a brake drum...
Mmm. . . might just be the speedo. I'd double check your speed with a GPS if you have one. My speedo usually reads about 3-5mph over the actual speed. Has it been regeared or had bigger tires put on? I still drive mine around at about 55-60. It would appear I'm already leaking oil from a...
I'm planning on doing a 4" lift on my 1028 using mostly ORD parts. Thus far I have ordered the shackle flip kit, new shocks for the rear, and the 4" HD springs for the front. I still need to measure and order new front shocks, brake lines, and I am probably gonna order a set of ORD shackles...
@ Rick. Thanks for the info. 70-75 seemed a little high to me too.
People who have followed behind me have already said they can see wheel and tire bouncing. When I had the problem the first time I took it into Firestone and had the alignment done. Not sure if they did the front or both...
Supposedly the U.S. Gear OD's are no longer in production. Sounds like U.S. Gear got bought up by a company called AxleTech International, which decided to scrap production of the OD units.
Supposedly the guy the tires were bought from was willing to warranty them. I really don't run the truck with a heavy load. The truck originally had troop seats (since removed) and all I keep in the bed is odds and ends I really don't care about having stolen (nothing that heavy. Probably not...
@Bevanet: Thought of that. Haven't had them checked yet, but it's definitely a possibility. Might not be a good idea, but I could definitely swap tires and wheels around and see if the problem continues.
I'm not sure at this point whether I should replace my tires or just wait for my new...
First thing I did when I noticed it today was take it to the Firestone on the way home. The guy I bought the truck from said the tires were put on a year ago or so, but they were bought as surplus. The mechanic at the Firestone said the spare that's bad is 7 years old and the one on the other...
I'd say don't even think about the NV4500. I do a fair bit of highway driving myself and have thought about the gearvendor. (Well, that and a set of 35's )
Here's a possible solution and the reason you probably shouldn't swap in a NV4500:
March 2011 Nuts & Bolts - 4-Wheel & Off-Road...
There's also another website called gsaauctions.gov with some really great stuff including military vehicles and other stuff as well (non-military vehicles, tools, parts from the space shuttle/NASA. No I'm not making this up.) You could also try googling "military vehicles for sale in montana"...
I keep having problems with tire belts going bad in my M1028. It's always the the drivers side rear tire and I always know when its going bad because the truck will start wobbling from side to side at low speeds and will start shaking badly at about 45-50 mph, which with the speedo the way it...
@ Choll
The glowplugs are 12V (That is why there is a resistor bank; to drop the voltage from 24V to 12V) The only part of the truck that is true 24V is the starter.
