    cucv alt

Picked up the rebuilt alt. About $58. And there was no doubt in my mind the guy knew what he was doing. I'm pretty happy. He also showed me something interesting. He put the alt on a tester and it was cranking out about 14.48 volts at a few hundred RPM's WITHOUT the exciter wire circuit and...

Check epay. Look for CUCV alternator. The shiny new looking ones from rare electrical will set you back $180. I'm having one rebuilt right now. Gonna pick it up tomorrow. Let you know what kind of damage to the wallet.

    Convert to 12V?

It is part of the charging system. It also comes on when I start the truck up and goes out as it should (which means its working) But. . . it also starts flickering or even glows cherry red at high RPM's (usually around 45,50,55 MPH, but also sometimes just before the truck shifts into 3rd) The...

    Convert to 12V?

Not yet. davidkroberts is saying its a bad connection. I'll have to double check. I've already cleaned all the contacts. Might have to start replacing them. Honestly, the thought of completely redoing the WHOLE d*** electrical system with new wires has crossed my mind. I know some of the wires...

    Convert to 12V?

I already know what the responses are going to be but, here's my situation: Despite all my replacing, swapping, checking, cleaning, fiddling, rechecking and anything else I can possibly think of, I can't seem to get GEN1 to want charge. You name it, I've done it: Replaced the alternator (twice)...

    cucv alt

The stuff on epay comes from Rare electrical. They have the isolated ground GEN 2 alts. It looks nice, but I've heard its Chinese made and it only has a 1 year warranty, but I've had no problems with mine in the GEN2 position the last 6 months. They also sell 24V starters (again, probably...

M1028 roadtrip from TN to NE

I've got a pair of cheapie batteries and my buddy has a battery charger, so I'm probably gonna throw them gon and put a good charge on them before I head out. If nothing else I can use them to jump the truck if worse comes to worse. I used one of them today to jump off his little puddle-hopper...

M1028 roadtrip from TN to NE

So after 4 years, I have left the service and am heading back home to Nebraska. Right now I'm in east Tennessee visiting an old friend. The plan is to get some basic stuff done on the truck tomorrow (drop off an spare alternator to have it rebuilt, change the oil, clean the air filter, etc) and...

    New Glow Plugs. Much Better!

How big of a pain was it to get the old ones out? Mine are shot and they're definitely getting replaced before the lovely Midwest winter rolls around. Might just throw a turbo on the truck when I do, since I got to yank out the glow plugs anyways. And when I'm putting the turbo on, I might as...

    Mechanics?

If your GEN lights are coming on, also make sure to check the exciter wire circuits. There should be instructions in the FAQ thread for checking the exciter wire voltage. Also, there's some weird stuff in those circuits that can make the alternators not charge (I.E. the GEN idiot light light...

First LSSV I ever saw had the new (newer?) GM body-style. The little voice inside my head started screaming "DADDY WANTS!!!" Oh well, I'm sure we'll starting seeing them on GL in 15 years. . .

    Another Death Wobble Dilema

Did you replace these? Dana 60 Kingpin Springs and Bushings Kits from Offroad Design 4x4 Parts How about your steering stabilizer? What kind of condition/how old are those tires? Even tires that look great on the outside can be in need of replacement. The truck looks like its been lifted. Is it...

    1994 Military Suburban

What you can do, if you have a M1008 or M1028 with a good drivetrain, but a crappy body is put the drivetrain on a similar year Suburban body and chassis. I saw this done once. The truck was dubbed the "Combat Cadillac" Like a M1009 on steroids

Speaking of owning a CUCV, if the eco-weenies give you any trouble, you can always tell them "but it runs on 100% recycled dinosaurs. . ." Or if it you own a multifuel deuce, you can always tell them it runs on the stuff that comes out of their Priuses, nobody wants, and is a pain in the a** to...

    Voltmeter replacement: Will this work?

Thanks for the heads up. Now that you mention it, it very well could be the resistor. The voltmeter doesn't seem to want to get above a certain point in the green no matter how many volts its getting. Last night I was getting 30+ volts across the batteries  The voltmeter should have been...

Making this truck a daily driver

I can't see why not. But, I also can't see why since the 1009's have the 3.08 gears. You should be able to do 60, 65, 70 pretty easily. Chances are with a 1009, you're gonna blow up those 10-bolts before you blow up the 700R4. Sorry if I have a low opinion of the axles. I've seen too many of...

    Voltmeter replacement: Will this work?

Yep, its still 24V. I'm gonna be moved outta here by the end of the week, but if you've still got it when I get resettled I'd be happy to buy it. Like I said though I still haven't run through the troubleshooting section for the voltmeter in the -20 yet. I'm thinking it could also be the relay...

Cool. I hadn't seen the one for the M1009 yet. I can't tell, is that an actual picture or more of a painting like the first one?
