Ditto on the defective IP. My 003A did EXACTLY the same thing. Bought a rebuilt IP from Delks and the 003A will load test 12,500 watts all day. RPM's only start to drop off when I approach 15,000 watts. I do not recommend running it that hard, but with the rebuilt IP, it will do it.
I have a couple of MEP gens with bad transducers. I have tried several different alternatives without much success. While cruising ebay I noticed some NOS vibrating reed type Hz meters for sale. They are the sealed type meters that should survive in the MEP. I think there still may be some...
I had a similar problem with one of my 002A's and I "fixed" it with a 5 cent resistor. The built in Hz meter read 65Hz when the Fluke 87 VOM indicated 60Hz. Since I (like most everybody else) am only interested in getting an accurate Hz reading at or very near 60Hz, I added a resistor in...
Check the starter "over run or starter cut out" switch for proper operation. It is located just in front of the oil filter. As a temporary measure to see if that is your problem, disconnect the Cannon connector with 2 wires located just above and just to the left of the oil filter and jumper...
PROBLEM FOUND. Initially I tested the linear reactor in the circuit and got acceptable ohm readings. However today I started removing some of the major components in the box. When I removed the linear reactor it came out in two pieces and the plastic cover came out in about 4 pieces. When I...
Well everything checks out in my spare voltage / phase selection box, except it won't "work" when installed in a working 003A. The bridge rectifier board has been removed and ohmed out per the TM and OK. The linear reactor ohms out per the TM. The two CT's ohm out per the TM. The wiring...
Thanks Isaac-1
I have three 003A gens and two 002A gens. None of the CT's have any markings what-so-ever. Don't know where you got this info, but thanks.
I am trying to diagnose and hopefully repair a problem(s) with a spare voltage / phase selector box off a 003A. I have downloaded every TM that is available on this site. The spare voltage / phase selector box looks to be in great shape. It is clean inside, the the reconnect switch turns and...
A quick way is to connect via a an electric clothes dryer receptacle and "back feed" the breaker panel. Most electric clothes dryers are on a minimum 30A circuit which is OK for a 002A. Use a length of 10 gauge cable with a plug that will mate to the clothes dryer receptacle. Make sure you cut...
I emailed a former EE professor and a friend who designs generator systems for Cummins. Both watched the youtube video and both are vaguely familiar with the 002A and 003A gens. Both said it was a very good video that showed in simple terms that the two gens were sync'ed. What we did not see...

Paralleling generators that were never designed with the additional circuitry to enable them to be safely and properly run in parallel, even identical generators such as two each MEP 002A's, can be risky. I am not saying it can't be done and I am not saying the...
The problem with paralleling 002A, 003A and similar generators that ARE NOT designed to be paralleled is this. In order to be successfully paralleled the sine wave current produced by one generator must be identical to and synchronized to the sine wave current produced by the other generator...
There are lots of liquids you can pour into the cylinders. As Isaac said, Marvel Mystery Oil, ATF, PB Plaster (shoot a whole can into each cylinder), various penetrating oils etc. Which ever one(s) you use let them "work" for a few days and continue to try to turn the engine over. I am not...
Exactly right! You may go to many sales before hitting the jackpot. I was actually looking for parts units, which were plentiful at this sale. It seems that most people are interested in "whole" generators. Many times the generators that are "ugly" and that have been cannibalized and...
As someone who has several 002A and 003A generators and who maintains a few more for others, I am facing possible 24V GP issues in the future. As late as two weeks ago I was able to purchase 4 each brand new 24V GP's with copper washer for what I consider to be a very reasonable price. I could...
I have two diesel fuel tanks on my farm. One is 300G and one is 600G. Even though I "turn the fuel over" at least once a year, I add a product called "Killem" which is a biocide. Diesel fuel is an organic compound. That means it was once a living organism. Anything that is organic (HC) has...
Joe - You are 100% correct. I never meant to infer that by adding a resistor in series with the Hz gauge in my 002A that it still held perfect calibration all the way across the meter face from 55 - 65 Hz. However IN MY CASE adding the resistor definitely made the Hz gauge on the 002A metering...
The Hz gauge on my 002A was reading about 5 Hz high. When my Fluke 87 VOM indicated 60 Hz the gauge on my 002A showed 65 Hz. Having nothing to lose I experimented by adding a a few different resistors in series with the built in Hz gauge until it read 60 Hz while the Fluke 87 was also reading...
It was suggested using a resistor to reduce the 24V applied to the OE glow plugs in MEP generators to 12V so 12V glow plugs can be used. It can be done, but let's look at what needs to be done and how and why.
The original 24V glow plugs used in the 002A and 003A generators read around 5 ohms...
