They didn't kill the F450, they just took a HUGE step backwards and put F350 axles under it. They took a truck that had no peer for its size and made it an overweight F350 (the 450 uses much heavier frame and other components).
Heck, my driveway is WAY more than a 10% grade :)
Thanks Shawn, it is my personal daily driver that does double duty hauling our armored green things. It's 5 years old now (born May 2007) with 75,000 on it. I can't replace it now as Ford has neutered them for model year '11+. To save weight, they downgraded both axles amongst other things...
I have the Dana/Spicer Model S110 under my F450 with an axle rating of 14,700 from Dana but I wouldn't even think of that kind of load behind it, not in that fashion any way. Don't get me wrong, I tow heavy but I use a 30,000 rated gooseneck hitch to tow that kind of load. Are you using some...
Just don't get caught by "Officer Friendless", he'll undoubtedly sell you a nice and EXPENSIVE piece of paper. Just because the springs are rated for that load doesn't mean the axle is and you look to be WAY beyond the factory ratings. Please be careful!
It does look cool with a Deuce behind...
Even better, my F450 puked its A/C pump last year pulling the armor to the Arlington Airshow. I'll have to stop by and check them out, I drive by there every day and it's only about 3 miles from here.
There have been quite a number on loan to VFW's but most if not all are still US Govenment property. There are fewer owned by individuals, I had paperwork from the Secretary of the Army giving up all rights to my vehicle with it's serial number listed.
I've seen 2 for sale in the last 10-12 years, mine was the best at the time but who knows now. The 900 cu.in. supercharged 500 HP gasoline engine is VERY thirsty! About 1 mpg at cruise. At 10.5' wide and at 50,000 lbs. it's a pain to move.
Not quite as cramped as you might think but you do have to feed the hungry beasts at 4 rounds a second, they are thirsty. You need 2 people to move and load a 4 round clip into each gun every 2 seconds. Hence they often ringed the basket with them. The gunner and the operator of the computer...
Welcome Zac, I was into Mustangs most of my 50 years, now I have the green disease and all but one Mustang is gone . . . not a classic though, '09 GT500KR. I'm getting soft in my old age. Besides, when you own armor like we do, a little modern comfort is a welcome change.
This area is...
A M989A1 HEMAT is a BIG HEAVY trailer. As an absolute MINIMUM you'd need a 5 ton to tow it off road. Plus you'd need to have the towing truck loaded to help to provide traction as the tow bar arrangement provides no trailer to towing vehicle weight transfer. They were specifically designed to...
Dave, if you run across another I'd be interested, I thought about the Std. 8v92's that were just auctioned, and 2-3 looked unused, but they are still an unknown condition. I'm looking for, preferably, a TA, either new or rebuilt. I'd probably have it turned up a bit before installation...
Nice paint work but you couldn't give it to me, let alone be seen driving it. I would like to admire the work in person for a 1/2 hour or so  Just because I don't personally like it, doesn't mean I don't admire the quality of work or the thoughts behind it.
I get plenty of smiles and waves but that is NOTHING to what my wife gets when she drives the HEMTT. A small blond woman driving that truck gets nothing but ASTONISHMENT
Like the HEMTT series trucks the front axles steer at a greater angle than the next axle for a given input. This difference allows them to steer with a decided crab. I wouldn't expect precise steering but it would allow undocking and docking with different carrier units. If you owned one...
