Probably a bad Bendix. It's slipping. The motor does not turn until the solenoid has pulled the Bendix into the flywheel and makes the contacts at the end of it's stroke.
That is why it did not run. A common problem. There should be a three legged clip that holds it to the bottom of the HH, right under the spring. When they fall off the plunger in the HH does not move enough to build pressure. Find the clip.
You know with out those bearing caps that rear end may be junk. I think they are machined in place and another set may not line up. Maybe their in the truck somewhere.
