If/when I get my deuce stuck, I think what you have mounted in place of the winch would be what I would grab first. Drink a nice cold one and think about the situation for a spell. I did the same thing as you on my 65 M35A2 and I sure am glad I did not mount the winch and the PTO...

If you have not tried it already, I would still lift the lever off of the solenoid just prior to cranking her over or get someone to turn over the engine whiie you lift the lever and see if the white smoke reappears. 2cents

OPCOM - Here are some pics of the standard steel battery box installation.
Chevytruck - It has not been below 30 deg since I got the Optimas, but so far so good. They were $133 each at Sam's.
My truck had red top Optimas in it when I picked it up at Ft. Lewis.
The steel battery boxes I have seen usually have (2) tabs that flip up in front of the battery box and are secured by thumb screws. I had to take the tabs off and drill the holes in the rails on my battery box . Let me see if I can find a pic to post.
FWIW - From what I have seen most LEDs for automotive applications are rated for either 12V or 24V and have resistors built-in to the lamp assembly for operation at their rated voltages.

-A set of Optima 6TL adapter trays from OD_Iron
-A set of Optima red top batteries from Sam's Club
