The red color of the ATF can be mistaken for the red dye added to "off road" diesel fuel. You can get in trouble if you are ever stopped and they think you are running non-taxed off road diesel fuel on the highway. There are big fines for this.

The bell housing should not have the drain plug installed. The drain should be open and the drain plug is stored in a threaded hole near the drain hole. Make sure the drain is open. I know on at least some trucks the bell housing is pressurized for fording when the drain plug is installed.
What does the stuff smell like? A petroleum smell like tar or crude oil, or like rotten eggs? Do you see rust in the bottom of the tank?
