Update. Today hauled a boom lift, 13k+ lbs. Total drive back loaded was 1.5 hours. Outside temp was 95+ The third mountain pass I hit 200+ but that's about as hot it would get and then go back down under 200 till i hit a hill again.

Not sure what your talking about on the PTO. They have a hydraulic system. 24v is the same as 12v, (obviously higher) check with multimeter hot to metal. On the lights Start with the basics is the 3 lever light in the right position? Both levers need to be right for lights to work.
The damage happens when uncle sam has the truck. Dead batteries and jumping. I had the same thing happen on a M35A3. About 6 months after I got it lost an alternator.
Yes this is common. This has been covered in past threads. Its caused by overworking the alternator. The trucks sit for long periods of time and kills the batteries. Its then jump started and it builds heat and over time fries them. Seems to be more common on reserve trucks for obvious reasons.
I've never had to pull mine but ive looked at it and its similar to an A2 which I have pulled. I cut a 9/16 wrench in half to get to that last bolt that is a pain. A few bloody knuckles and a few cuss words help.
Hauled the M35a3 on lowboy today and the hottest the gauge showed was 160. 90+ heat today. Something does not sound right, either my gauge is off or maybe yours is off? Hope some others with m916 or m920 can chime in. And yes the TM says anything over 225 is bad but towing that "small" of a...
Eagle point, Oregon. SOMVCC Drove M916 with M35a3 on back. NG was there with some M1028 oshkosh units fresh off the line. Sat inside and checked them out real close.
