It sounds to me like BARS stop leak, It looks like oil / tar and is made to be put into the coolant system...... Personally, I would not worry about it.
Devilman is right, Once it is put into a system it is hard to compleatly get the residu out.
Good for you stretch for being willing to help out. I go to Shelby all the time and no way would I have ever thought that creek would swell to that depth.

Simply go to any auto parts store and tell them you need bearings and seals for a 1977 Dodge W-200 with a Dana 44. ( full time 4WD )
I am not sure about the special tools you are talking about, but the axels are the same that you could get in a Dodge cilvian truck.
