I was thinking of doing something similiar with my 923a2. Glad to see that I am not the first to cross the bridge.
I have a buddy that has a similiar set up on his dump truck to pull a gooseneck trailer. He went with a longer receiver hitch instead of the offset hitch though.

This is my situation with my 923a2 but I think the tailgate was replaced at some point. The paint was flaking off way worse than the rest of the truck and the stops that are supposed to hit the bumperettes were in the wrong spot. I know that doesn't affect the chain length but maybe something...
I used a 4" latch because it had a little more throw than a shorter latch. It is a tight fit in there though.
I lined it up on the back to mark the holes and used lock nuts so it wouldn't come loose. All the metal in that area is pretty thin so the drilling is fairly easy.

This is my cheapy door lock. It is a 4" gate latch that will accept a padlock if so desired. The hidden installation is key to the system.

Somebody had pics of a 5 ton dumper (can't remember the number) painted like that. It was a good looking truck. I was tempted to go that route but didn't want to paint the whole undercarriage.
