No it has bearings that can go out, when the compressor is not running it acts like an idler pulley.

Maybe something in the belt system, AC comp, idler etc. Looks like maybe the tensioner or compressor.

Any time you are doing electrical work where you are going from off to run repeatedly you should disconnect the TSU or you can burn up the glow plugs. Any time the TSU is plugged in and you turn the run switch to off you MUST wait at least 90 second before going back to run. All this is laid out...

If you disconnect the batteries the codes will be erased.

If you disconnect the batteries you will erase the codes, you would need to drive it again enough to cause it to go into limp mode and then try again without disconnecting the batteries.

Then it is likely ether the lamp is not getting power from the inst. panel of the lamp is bad.

I was reading about some guy trying to mate a VW to the 404, he was trying to hand make an adapter as there are none available. This would be difficult given the design of the 404 bell housing. I think with the lack of an adapter a MB engine would be the most likely candidate, like GM and others...

Actually I see two salvage vehicle at auction in TX with the OM617 at this time, I may just get one and see if it is worth using. Although I would REALLY like to get away from IDI, they are certainly the dogs of the diesel world.

One problem is 99% of key switches cannot handle the massive reverse EMF from the starter solenoid and arc internally, this for sure has caused the destruction of many starters and very likely some EESS boxes. Even switches that are made for 24V big trucks only control a small relay that is...
