    Prototype 5 ton 6X6 M956

It's a light duty, high rpm engine, not known for longevity. It can be a decent engine in the right application, but the Cummins used in the 900 series was a MUCH better choice. http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=366857&DisplayType=nested

    1,680 mile HEMTT recovery

Thanks! I-10 is starting to look like the preferred route! I'm more familiar with I-40, but by the time the EUC clears I was thinking I-10 might be a better choice since the roads are less likely to be icy. Jon

    1,680 mile HEMTT recovery

That's very encouraging... Thanks! The inspection reports are quite thorough and much appreciated, I spent hours studying the pictures, descriptions, and oil analysis data in deciding which trucks to bid on. In the end I won the Louisiana truck but I am glad for all the buyers of the Ft. Worth...

    Deuce purchase issue in California

The supervisor at the Barstow DMV told me, after the clerk said no CDL is required to drive my deuce, "There's no such thing as a historic commercial vehicle. Once you register any vehicle historic, it becomes an automobile." Indeed, the registration for my deuce states, "type of vehicle -...

    1,680 mile HEMTT recovery

I should mention that I was only referring to the pictures of the HEMTTs. If the truck you won was something else, it's entirely possible it is full of coolant. The HEMTTs in Ft. Worth I'm pretty sure have been operated with the coolant drained. Someone needs to clunk their knuckles on those...

    1,680 mile HEMTT recovery

Thanks guys! I don't have absolute PROOF that the coolant was drained, or that it is/isn't a standard practice there, but nearly all of the Texas trucks showed overheating on the gauge, and that is too much of a coincidence. I remember one or two showing 180 as you say, but even that is...

    1,680 mile HEMTT recovery

Hey Group, I won a 1989 M985 HEMTT on Oct. 21, at Ft. Polk, Louisiana! 8-) Out of the 20 or so HEMTTs sold that day, I believe the one I won is in the best condition. Most of them were in Texas, one in North Carolina, I think one in Wisconsin, and mine in Louisiana. Many of the Texas trucks...

    Ultimate Brake Fluid Reservoir

You know, I wish I knew... It showed up in a tri-wall box of miscellaneous surplus MV parts. It's off an MV of some sort, something modern I think. I've hoped someone would recognize it. The fitting is actually standard flare, with a little brass cap over it... So I just close the ball valve...

    M35A2 + 6-71T Detroit Diesel 2 Stroker Marriage ???

G is right... The 71 series is too big and heavy for a deuce. A 6-71 doesn't even fit in the earlier M54 series 5-tons without a doghouse cover in the cab. For a 6-71 you really need an 800 series or bigger. I've looked into putting a Detroit in a deuce. A 6V-53 won't fit without moving the...

    Ultimate Brake Fluid Reservoir

Here's mine... I didn't want to have to open the hood to check the level. The fitting is for my power bleeder and the valve is to shut off the reservoir when bleeding since it has a vented cap. Jon

what pressure are you running in your 9.00x20's?

I run 25 psi in the rear and 50 in the front. Like Ray said, air 'em up if you're going to be hauling something. You'll be amazed how much better the ride is... No more bouncing back there. Jon

    1952 Studebaker V18A/MTQ

It's a multi fuel tank but they're basically the same... The main difference is that the multi fuel tank has a bigger opening to accommodate the in-tank pump. The gasser uses an in-tank filter and has a 2-way breather on it, so I took a multi fuel pump assembly and chiseled off everything...

Hard starting on this cold 60 deg day

Unless your engine is really clapped out, I would blame something other than the weather... My deuce starts the same - that is, instantly - right down to freezing. I've started it on a 25 degree morning covered with snow and it only cranked maybe 1 second. If it's not clapped out, I'd check...

    Gap between window and cab

In addition to the advice already given, I would add that the window travel is adjustable. There are two little slotted angle brackets inside each door which set the travel limits. Just take the inside door access panel off, watch as you crank the window up and you'll see when it hits those...

    Obvious differences between engines

I'd try Jabsco or Kleen Strip paint stripper before sand paper. My engine's data plate is printed with some kind of chemical treatment, not paint, so the stripper *probably* won't remove it... The stripper will *probably* blister off the paint and leave the data plate unharmed. Jon

Here's a video of me raising the derrick pole... I'll be driving around and drilling holes very soon! Jon https://youtu.be/1Jlb0eFDl9s

    1952 Studebaker V18A/MTQ

Here's a video of the first successful start... There had been some earlier attempts, but the starter drive was bad so I had to overhaul the starter. Also I had noticed that the engine no longer rotated freely by hand - A few years ago I could grab the fan or belts and easily rotate it...

    1952 Studebaker V18A/MTQ

I can't believe how time has flown by, I've owned this truck since 2007 and haven't updated this thread since 2009, but after spending the last few years working on other projects I have finally returned to the V-18... and finally got it running! I still have to finish the brakes and put the...

    Pole Pulling Jack Mounting Bracket?

Wow, thanks! I have that TM but had never noticed that picture before. I guess there's a little more to the bracket than I thought, it looks like it was pressed steel rather than fabricated... I suppose I should exhaust the possibility of finding an original bracket in a scrap yard before...
