If you get into a rebuild, be advised the main bearings in the 302 are progressively larger in diameter from front to rear. This little detail gives you a big chance to make a mistake installing main bearings!
We have no ethanol fuel available through Co-Op stations here. It is also available at marinas. Paying the extreme price at airports for 100LL is not a good idea in my estimation. The no ethanol Co-Op runs currently about $3.14 per gallon. I saw at the airport last time I was there that 100LL...
I have had luck with jumping 12 volts from another 12 volt vehicle to just the battery that has the positive lead to the starter circuit coming off it. I leave both batteries in the 24 volt vehicle connected as normal. No damage ensues to either the 24 volt vehicle or the 12 volt vehicle. If...
It would not be worth the risk to me. I want to keep my good record! I am sure you can find plenty of buyers in the US if you want to sell it. Whether you can find solid evidence of it or not I would not do it. They might miss it in looking for it.
Work the master several times then look under the truck at all lines and at the inner side of the wheels for fluid running out. If it is the master level should go down also.
Drive it in like it is. There is still a lot of (I assume it has it) antifreeze in the block. If it did have antifreeze in it, which I assume it did since it is so cold there, then if you add water you will have to drain everything to get the proper antifreeze mix again when you refill it...
Great that you got it back, that does not happen often! It never had the alcohol fuel in it so I think the tank has a good chance of being saved. The alcohol fuel will destroy components with gusto. We can buy no alcohol added fuel at the Farm Bureau CoOp here and at marinas. We buy it even...
In the long run, how about for the front using the wheels off a 1950's era M135 GMC deuce? The wheels for the single wheel trucks have a different center spacing, the rim is set further out in relation to the hub center by an inch or better. I do not know from trying it but it would give you...
I agree with MWMULES. Actual split rims are split in the middle of the rim section width. They go back many years, became obsolete long ago. Semantics can be everything here. Too often the lock ring rims are called split rims which scares off potential repair guys with good reason. They are...
In this case fear comes from lack of understanding, and there is a lot of fear about them out there. Find the right person(s) and this will be a no problem exercise. Cleaning the rims and rings, especially the groove the ring sits in, and repainting will help re-seating the ring and increase the...
I agree with NDT about the first things to try and safety. Make sure all shift linkages are freely moving and moving the shift rod in the transfer they attach to. We have found them rusted tight on some trucks that sat idle for a long time. You did not mention whether or not your lever moved...
It might be a good idea to check the linkages for the shift lever. A sticking, rusted pin and clevis or pivot point can make shifting unreliable and difficult. Keep them oiled.
Red, thanks! You got me to go out and look under a truck! So, everyone, ban me to a pit of itchy leaves with no food and water for a week! I was wrong about the pump drive coming off the transfer. I got my memory confused with the drive for the fuel pump on my 2 1/2 ton fuel tanker truck. That...
Unless I am not seeing what I am supposed to, it looks as if your hydraulic system is driven off the two way PTO on the transmission. The M51 trucks I have drive the hydraulic system for the dump bed off a transfer case PTO, not the transmission PTO. The lever at the left side of the seat at the...
I have a 3053 that works except for a tooth missing on the countershaft front gear. Sounds like your problem is in other locations that are good in this transmission. Parts likely could be taken out of it to repair yours. I can work on it (transmission out) but it will take some time and a...
We pull an 18 ton Ferree tandem axle trailer with air brakes behind our deuce and M51A2 dump with no air problems ever noted. We really like the feeling of having the load under control the air brakes on the trailer provide. With the warnings posted here we will watch for it though. I think some...
Try Summit Racing for TransGo shift kits. They make a wide range of really good kits for many applications from performance street to full on race. You can find Summit by web searching their name. I have used both the street and full race kits and find them easy to install with the step by step...
