Today I was doing a once over, checkin nuts and bolts, greasing things, checking fluids, putting anti-seize on little fasteners that were gettin rusty and I noticed the coolant surge tank had kinda a rusty film in it. I read a few threads about what kind of flush additives to use, CLR, an acid...
I didn't realize the doghouse needed to be removed myself.. I guess I wasn't paying very close attention. Seems it would be a little more difficult for the winch trucks. I need to look a little closer at what's involved in removing the winch controls, shifter and doghouse. Thanks for the info...
That's pretty funny.. I understand what you're asking about the loaded thing but I have never heard of two different speed ratings (loaded vs unloaded). That's not to say there isn't, I just haven't seen it. I think a speed rating is a speed rating. I'd sure hate to have a blowout like Triple C...
Welcome from SanAntone and good luck! I would suggest reading the recovery threads as previously stated. It's good info from some smart experienced fellas. Also use google "recovery list steelsoldiers" to help search or the search this forum tool.
Juan is absolutely right, I apologize for not differentiating between the two motors. I was speaking of the NHC-250, I have no experience with the 8.3..
Fred,
Yes sir, the chances are that they were just recently fired up. These trucks take a while to warm up all the way. When the engines got hot enough the fan kicks on and you can generally hear it pulling a lot more air.
The fan clutch kicks on and off at a certain temp.. There is an emergency bolt to lock up the fan to where it spins all the time if the clutch goes out.
The answer varies though, highway or offroad? You could pull much more weight in low range on a private country road than you could on an interstate with lots of traffic around. I would never suggest pulling/hauling more than the GVWR of the vehicle you are operating..
You can Google search those questions. Search "5 Ton dump bed steelsoldiers" and so on.. Jcappeljr has some threads out there that deal with flatbed bobbed trucks.

I gotcha, that's pretty wild it blew like that after a recent rebuild.. I bet you're right, either a defective piston or shoddy rebuild. My motor is the same, an 07' and as shiny as it could be. How many miles is it showing?
Also something to think about, the A-1/A-2 models come with the 14.00-20 super singles which are only rated for 56MPH, the truck can go faster but I highly recommend not doing so. The "A-0" models I believe can do 55 but I think that is very close to redline due to the smaller size tires. I...
