Sounds like a fluke. Buy another correct value resisitor and try again. Was it securely mounted? Mine has little brackets that mount it to the firewall, that may help dissipate some of the heat the resistor generates.
I have a response: It's telling that person where to put something, and it's my monkey and my circus. I cleaned that up quite a bit...don't want to be banned.
OP, Here is a link to check out on the repair of the front axle air switch.

I would run it for an hour or two and vary the load on the generator. Run it no load for 15-20 minutes, 1/2 load for 15-20 minutes, and a full load for 15-20 minutes, and then do the sequence again. Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 are both good oils...after your break-in, drain the oil...
How did everything work out? Like The King Machine said, you may also have some trouble in the turn signal switch, the contacts can become corroded and will give you fits. Open it up and shoot a little contact cleaner in there, then blow it out with compressed air.
I would put a rubber grommet in the bed support where you ran your light wire through. Without the grommet, you may be looking for a short later on. Just my 2 cents.
I agree with Welldigger, sounds like a short, you've pinched a wire somewhere. Re-trace the headlight wires back from the headlight, physically searching every inch.
As others have said, definitely not a dropside bed M35A2("C"). Nice truck though. Download the Operator's Manual for her, that will answer any questions you may have on operation.
