Thats not what I said and not whats shown in diagram., Lets try it this way, Unfiltered oil goes from outside of the canister( hose from HP oil galley on the side of the block to the "side" of filter housing ) to the inside of...
I had to do frt brakes to but I had to do my inner seals also as they were leaking so even though my zipperd boots looked fine, I know my luck and how it runs so I went ahead and put one piece silicone boots on while I was down there so I now won't have to go there again....hopefully:roll:

Oil from the the gallery comes in to the side of the canister then through the element then thrugh the little metering hole in the center tube then out the bottom of the canister then returns to the pan via the oil pressure relief...

I did my land rover and M-38 "gas" tanks with hirsch tank sealer -Hirsch Automotive Products and was happy with the results and gas is more aggresive to coatings then diesel fuel. Also check around your area as there are radiators shops that will not only boil your tank but will coat it as well
