I was surprised at how big the rust flakes can get. I found some that came from the reservoir tank and got lodged in the small hose going to the oil cooler that were just as wide as the hose ID!
This was one of the lesser flakes

I remember reading that they pop off and relieve pressure after a certain amount of pressure has built up. So I imagine any pressure below that would be retained.
