I haven't geeked out about it for a long time but most trucks intentionally (engineered in) have a wider track width in the front to maintain proper Ackerman steering geometry. I've been told that it's best not to mess that up with custom offsets & such. I'm not sure what nuances are involved...

I just love the M813 and if I didn't have one of them I would have another 809 series truck. If you build one you could start with a short wheelbase M818 tractor and put a shorter bed on it. Several fellas on here have real nice examples like this.

On the front axle I would recommend checking the torque on the nuts that hold the spindle to the knuckle while you're into it; mine were almost loose.
