What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I drove my truck to the Sunday potluck like you read about in the pioneer novels. I took all the teenage boys for rides with turbo whine & jake brake action and then told them to make sure their moms buys themselves an army truck😉... The truck ran great all day and I didn't have to downshift...

Water temp gauge erratic when running, steady with engine off

I briefly ran the truck yesterday just parked in the yard and the gauge was steady as could be. Alternator output was also steady at 28.52 volts. Could be the previous behavior was a fluke or I'm starting to see intermittent erratic gauge behavior which would point to a failing gauge, right?

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

My 90° elbow hose finally arrived - it's a Gates 28466 which starts out at about 4" x 6". I trimmed off about 2" per end and it went on like a glove 😁 I cranked it up and idled it for awhile until the filter got warm. Only two leaks to tighten and everything is running good! I'll be running...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

I finally drained the radiator so that I could install the shutoff valves from the coolant heater kit; one on the water manifold with the included pipe bushing and one on the oil cooler in the existing pipe bushing. A section of hose connects the supply side and on the return side it's waiting...

M813: Swap voltage regulator on the truck or off the truck?

So I tried removing the voltage regulator with the alternator still mounted and I couldn't get the 6 O'clock screw out with a flat screw driver of any kind. If that screw had been an indented hex or torx or something else I think I could done the job while mounted.

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

I think I have the bulk of the heater hose plumbing worked out. Following the instructions for the filter install and the advice of some over-the-road truckers I'm going to tee into the filter with the heater hoses so that there will be a bypass route if either the filter or heater core get...

    Alternator carnage!

I looked through those posts and that does look like a clean, simple upgrade. Does that setup have just a 1 wire hookup?

That's a pretty epic horn! Someone's gonna soil their britches when that goes off

    My M813 gets a turbo!

Thank you - I like it a lot! Too bad I didn't hit the jakes in the video, but I will next time 😁

Water temp gauge erratic when running, steady with engine off

The gauge could be crapping out but it's suspicious that it only bounces when the alternator is spinning.

    My M813 gets a turbo!

Beautiful day for a drive, but the camera memory ran out before I could get to a place where jake brakes are allowed...next time

Water temp gauge erratic when running, steady with engine off

Anything is possible. It's an old alternator with a new voltage regulator that was burnt up inside...

Water temp gauge erratic when running, steady with engine off

The title describes what I'm seeing which is a new behavior ever since I replaced the voltage regulator. The needle bounces back and forth from far left up to actual engine temp with the engine/alternator running. When I shut off the engine but keep the master switch on the temp gauge is...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Parts have been accumulating for adding a coolant filter including the Napa 4019 filter base, Donaldson filter, MIL-DTL-6000D military 5/8" coolant hose, various fittings and clamps. I designed up an adapter plate out of 3/8" stainless to attach to the outside of the oil cooler housing...

    Alternator carnage!

Not sure if it's the main culprit or not but when I was installing the turbo I found that the ground wire for the alternator was completely loose. Barely attached and about to fall off the frame stud.

    Alternator carnage!

Success! A shop vac, a flat screw driver, and some electronics cleaner got it all cleaned up inside and the new regulator went back on. I got everything reinstalled, cleaned all connections, checked the voltage at wire 568 and then started it up. I was relieved to see the needle of the gauge...

    Alternator carnage!

While disassembling my voltage regulator to replace it I found what looks like Apollo 1 and smells like the best materials that the EPA banned decades ago. It looks like the fire? originated at the #5 terminal and made everything else nice & crispy. This alternator still works pumping out 33.2...

M813: Swap voltage regulator on the truck or off the truck?

From the outside It looks as though I could replace the voltage regulator on my M813's alternator while installed on the truck but I'm not sure what I'll get into once the cover is off. Are the wires easily identified? Am I getting into a fool's errand by thinking of doing this while installed?
