I hope you are seeing everyones opinion. Take heed of what they say. Its not worth your life or someone elses just to save a few bucks. You will have plenty of time behind the wheel once you have done a full PMCS and corrected all the issues.
It definately sounds like a ground issue. You really have to ground the flasher wire well. You have to go down to bear metal. Cattle repairman is probably correct. If you let the smoke out, it probably wont work.

Did you do anything to th engine. If the timing is off it can make the engine crank slow. Or if you have one battery thats weak. Or possibly a poor ground path. Topo has a good idea with the extra ground.
