There are a lot of threads on here about this problem. Just run a search. I don't know about NC, but here in NH, if the truck is not being used for a commercial application, and you own and tagged it yourself, you can have a semi w/ 40 ft trailer and drive it on your normal license. Think...
I have had good luck running the fuel out of the carb on shutdown with both the 2a016 and 4a032 engines. Never had a problem while they were running (4 cylinder unit ran for over 6 days a couple of years ago in an ice storm). Also, have added non-detergent oil to the gas @ about a quart to...
Best guy I know for working on Cummins is Bill Jones of Deerfield NH. Had a high HP 855 back in the late '80s early 90s that would spin the tires at speed with 100,000# on. Great guy.
Don't have any photos, but the M812A1 trucks carried both the foldup bridge sections and the boat that pushed them around. I think it used a 3-53 Detroit. In the manual section I think there is a manual.
Try disconnecting the supply hose to the two air shift valves and using some air tool oil (Marvel Mystery Oil or PB Air Tool Oil) flood the valves. Re hook the hose and try a few times. How long has the truck been out of action? May just be gunk in there.
Does it make any air noise from N to R...
The military electric gauges are not very exact. Install a cheap VIP/Auto Zone direct mount gauge and check the oil pressure; I would guess the pressure is OK.
Two years ago, I had M Series Rebuilders install a unit in an extra dist. unit we had for our M139 R6602. Not cheap, but it works great. They advertise in the MV mag for M38 upgrades, so I sent down the R6602 unit, so they could see what the differences were. Petronix # on the part is 07AA-24vn...
It looks like this engine may have injector issues. Leaky injectors will "burn" pistons and it looks like this has started. I would change all pistons, rebuild/replace the injectors & check the fuel pump for delivery and timing.
In April, a friend and I went to a local junk yard that has been closed for a while. The original owner is gone, but the son is still mining the yard for high grade scrap. Says he has a "tank" engine in one of the trailers, so we look it over and decide it is a ground power unit. Friend buys it...
We found that with the older M139 truck, the gear oil looked and acted like tar (needed a pick to break it up so it would drain), so we drained it, added new oil, ran it for a while and drained it again. Second time, still looked like tar but now seems OK. Oil from Sam's or TSC is cheap enough...
It's a Lucas style (aftermarket) Thermostarter. Tractor Supply stocks them for Ford and M-F tractors. Just hook it to a low or no pressure fuel source and apply voltage (12 VDC in this case) to the element terminal and the heat coil inside glows red and opens a little needle valve which lets...
Actually, the military is using glow plugs on the newer 6v53T Detroit Diesel engines in the updated M113 personal carriers. They must have gotten sick of the older Bendix style thermo-start systems that the original 6v53 engines had and went to the glow plugs like the 6.2/6.5 GMC engines.
The...
Looks like one engine has a Holley carb and the other has a Zenith? Ever had to get parts for the Zenith? If so, where did you get them? Thanks.
P.S. great job on the swap.
Run a search for propane injection for diesels. The pickup hot rod guys run propane injection on diesels for additional power and a little better milage. It acts like a booster, making the diesel fuel burn cleaner/better. It might work on a NA multi and make it smoke less, but the last time I...
