Are we talking about a 5 ton or a deuce?? The 5 tons are air shifted forward to reverse and the deuce is air locked in or out. The deuce is just like a '60s or '70s 4x4 pickup with the front and rear locked together when in four wheel drive. The 5 ton is always engaged, with the front drive at a...
Still wondering about carb kits or parts the the Zenith replacement carb used on the 5 ton gas engines. Looks like the carb on the 10 ton, but only has one air cleaner connection. Can't seem to find anything anywhere, but there must be something around.
For any diesel, I would use a good 15w-40 diesel oil. For gas engines, I use 10w-30 on the newer aluminum engines and non-det SAE 30 from Tractor Supply for the old iron flat head engines.
FYI, we have two size 31 batteries in the M812A1, and while it dosn't like it at 30F, it will start. Always wanted to try 2 size 4 equipment batteries, but not sure of fit.
Well, I will give it a try, at least with the issues we have had, and how they relate to the transfer case &/or sprag shifting:
1) All M54/M800 trucks front axles are engaged with the transfer case when running and driving, if there is air to the shift valves on top of the transmission & on...
I have no idea how long you have had your truck, or how long it sat before you got it, but when we got the M812A1, the coolent looked like rusty water. All the little small hose lines that connect between the thermostat housing, the engine, the radiator and the surge tank were either plugged...
That certainly could be done, we just don't intend to drive through 4-5' deep water with the water truck at this time (at least on purpose). When we did the clutch replacement, I just added a left over 90 and piece of plastic air line we had laying around so the air vented back instead or...
There seems to be a constant stream of 5 ton transfer case questions/problems that pop up on this site. Any suggestions for a thread addressing the bulk of these questions so when new members ask, they can be directed to one post? Of all the systems on the 5 ton trucks, this one item seems to be...
I agree with jwaller, there should be nothing in the vent hole between the two air shifter valves. If an open vertical hole bothers you (it did me) just screw in a 90 w/ a short length of hose/tubing directed down and out the back. Sometimes, the linkage connected to the air cylinder on the...
Jack up front end. With air tanks full & engine off, shift into reverse. You should not be able to rotate both front tires forward, but they will rotate in reverse. Shift into neutral or any forward gear and the reverse should be true. If either or both of these tests fail, the sprag or air...
We have an M139 based water truck (see avatar) with the gasser engine that runs OK. I have had a number of posts on this site about our problems and solutions as we built and fixed the truck. Look under our log in name for threads.
Be aware that the M139/M328 trucks are over width and if run...
Great Job!! Where did your carb shop get parts for the Zenith carb?? I have the replacement Zenith on our R6602 and can not find parts.
Re the paint, we used the same paint on the water truck and the only problem is sun damage after 4+ years. Took over 12 gallons to cover the truck.
How long and wide between the fenders are these little M116 trailers? Have a generator project that may fit on one of these. Set is 92" overall long and 36" wide. Weighs about 2,000#. Detroit 2-53 20 kw Delco set. Would put fuel tanke on each side in front or behind fenders for a total of 100...
Can we assume that these are M812s? If so, the PTO is a two way unit, front runs the front winch w/ two speeds and the rear runs the hydro pump for the a-frame and rear winch.
The rear axles are wider than standard M54/M800 style trucks, and the wheels are 10" wide but have deep offsets.
It was above 35F today so I thought I would try to start both trucks that are parked @ the shop for the winter to recharge the batteries and give them a little "run". The M139 was driven into the yard in early Nov. and has not been started since and the M812 just has been idle, last started...
We used a WIX filter base and bolted it in place of the existing unit. Tubing matched right up with the correct fittings. Lets us use spin on fuel filters, with anything from 5 micron to 30 micron with or without water drains.
We bought AR8S plugs from Memphis, cheap, that fit. Have Champion plugs in it now, that are hotter than the spec plug. No problems to date. In the back of the Champion master catalog, is a listing for the shielded plugs that shows the interchange and the heat ranges. The plugs for the R-6602...
Our early '60s built M139s have wider rear axle housings w/ the added spacers front and rear. Also, the rear tandem spacing is greater on the bridge trucks so the bigger tires will not hit each other. When we flipped the rear hubs, we left the spacers on to make the offset right for the deep...
