    803A Hits a Wall at 9.3kW

Regarding the exhaust temps, you want to be taking the temp from the head BELOW the exhaust ports. The area you show with the red circles is in fact the valve cover and will not give accurate exhaust temps. Hit that flat green area right below the exhaust manifold instead. Block airflow from...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

These work too, but take a bit longer and are not quite as easy to use.

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

I use a couple sifferent spring compressors, but with the head off the easiest thing is a "C" shaped one like this: Which is less than $20 on Amazon or Harbor freight.

    Excess military radio equipment

You probably don't have quite enough posts yet. I think you need 15? and you are at 12 now. I'll contact you instead. For others interested, the New England Wireless and Steam Museum is located at 1500 Frenchtown Rd. in East Greenwich RI. Details and events can be seen here: www.newsm.org

    MEP-804A Not Cranking

Not sure which manuals you have skimmed over, but the operators manual ( located in the TM section of this forum ) should explain step by step how to start the machine. Were you able to gain any info on the starting procedure from YouTube? Or are you still unclear on the steps? First things...

    Excess military radio equipment

I was there this weekend and did notice a few teletypes in the basement of the main building, along with several teletype manuals etc.

    PU 802

If you go up to the top of the page and go into the TM tab, scroll to the generator section and get the TM for an MEP-804A , the schematic will show you which wires you are asking for. I wouldn't use the PU-802 reference to find info on the generator itself, go with MEP-804A ( I assume you have...

    803A Hits a Wall at 9.3kW

One other comment on the IR thermometer, I usually put a piece of cardboard up near the front of the engine to block the airflow from the fan while taking exhaust temps. I've noticed that the fan will tend to make the front cylinder appear cooler than the rear when in fact it's just the...

    803A Hits a Wall at 9.3kW

Can you explain the smoke situation in more detail, when you exceed 35.5A? When the engine begins to bog down, are you seeing a moderate to heavy dark smoke or just a slight amount. When it goes from maintaining the load at just under 35A to bogging down at >35A is there a decent increase in...

    Mep 003a fuel pump connectors

A bit of advice, unplug the fuel pumps and test 1 at a time. The sound from 1 can mask a problem with the other. The pumps are intended to be redundant, however, each pump has 2 check balls in it and a problem with any 1 of the 4 check balls can potentially take down the whole fuel system. Also...

    Mep 003a fuel pump connectors

Fuel on the BOTTOM of that rod only would probably indicate a leak in the throttle lever assembly sticking out of the side of the injection pump. However, that will not cause it to run rough. The linkage moving up and down is the governor trying to maintain RPM's when the engine begins to...

MEP 802a no power at lugs making power before k1

Looks like you've got some pretty rusty terminal block screws in your first picture there. Might want to also check the operation of the circuit interrupter switch and make sure the diode on the back of the switch is in place, oriented correctly and is good.

    Excess military radio equipment

I'll see if I can find out.... I'm not one of the "radio guys", I gravitate more towards the Steam engines, but I'll check into it.

    Engine compartment cleaning

I used to do it all the time, every machine I ever bought for a thorough steam cleaning. Stay a little bit away from the generator, alternator etc., but don't be overly worried. When you're done you can blow it off with compressed air or a leaf blower. I've even lightly washed inside the...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

In addition to that data plate above, sometimes you may find a data plate from an engine rebuilder with the piston overbore, rod and main undersize engraved or stamped into the plate. But most of the time if it's a Lister Petter data tag as shown above, those are usually standard sizes, unless...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

If by chance you get it open and find a bigger problem I have pistons, rods and a couple used head cores ( good spare valves ) if you need other parts.

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

1247 hours is nothing on that engine. Barring any real physical damage I really don't think you will need the pistons bearings etc. Just some pushrods and top end gaskets. It's up to you but in my experience you will most likely not need the full rebuild kit. I have no experience with Friday...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

Ok, so here's the thing.... on that motor, after touching the rocker arm nuts you're supposed to tighten them and wait like 1/2 hour for the lifters to bleed down, otherwise they will hang open and hit the pistons slightly when you crank it AND bend the pushrods. Good news is this motor has the...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

Before you replace the cover I would use Deoxit5 contact cleaner ( think you already got some ) and thoroughly clean the main AC select switch. spray it on the small openings around where the contacts come out the sides, then vigorously exercise the switch, rinse and repeat! D o the AM/VM...

MEP-803A - New to me, excited to get it going.

If no equipment is available, do you have a garage you could back into and set up a chain fall or come-along on a beam spanning a few roof trusses / rafters, or a decent tree branch outside you could back that Ram Dually ( I can tell ) under?? Pick it up and drive out from under it.
