Remove the two hoses that run to the heater core. Use a garden hose on low speed on one of the removed hoses, see if water will run though the core. Reverse the garden hose and see how much crap comes out. Do this several times back and forth. You be shocked how much stuff is stuck in there...
I have just a 1500 heater on my unit, and that is all you will need. I has a little pump in it (tank heater) that moves the water though the system. Leave the heater on and in the defrost mode and it will keep your windows clean of frost as well.
Besure you extend the vent tube on top of the transmission. You will need to add some rubber tubing and get it up at least to the hood inside the motor box. Don't ask me how I know!!!!

I have an 86 1028, I drive it when I can lets say every other weekend or so. Here's the problem while parked (outside) the glass on the inside gets a film on it. I don't smoke, the Heater core is not leaking. I clean it off and it's a job sometimes, it just dosen't wipe off with Windex...
