LMTV early years, before 1996 'first contracts"

Besides the obvious wrong country and misspelled name, The Steyr 12M18 ( and later 12M21) were only the the basis of the FMTV, and only the exterior cab sheetmetal are the only thing in common. A M1078 weighs in at almost 5k lbs more empty than the Steyr... or an extremely heavy re-badge? :-D...

FMTV / LMTV / STEYR / commonality of parts

Only the exterior is the same, the interior of the cabs are different. Dash is nowhere close. More commercial than military. Before I bought my M1094, I had been looking to get a Steyr 12M18, but they are very popular in Europe and bring a hefty price, before shipping. Trucks are about 4000+...

FMTV / LMTV / STEYR / commonality of parts

The only thing that the FMTVs have in common is with the Steyr 12M18, and is sheetmetal parts on the early cabs. Everything else is completely different. Nothing with the Steyr you posted pics of. Dave

    FMTV High Speed Gears

sstephens637 I don't know why you are posting all this info on a A1. The truck in your sig line and the one you posted pics of in another thread is a M1078 A0. It has a Cat 3116, Allison 3070 and has a WTEC11 trans selector. They were upgraded a few years later to the WTEC111. BAE had an...

    FMTV High Speed Gears

That was the latest , greatest.:) Your truck has a Cat 3116 In the '90s, the MD3060 series ( which the 3070 belongs) was the auto trans going into everything with 230HP+ RVs and medium duty trucks and FMTV. My F700 was one of the last MD trucks built from Ford with a 230hp B5.9 and a Allison...

    FMTV High Speed Gears

sstephens637 I haven't followed the FMTV section closely since my War Pig (the FDT) build a couple years back, but you do know that your LMTV has a Allison MD3070 trans? ( or least left the factory with one ;) )

    LMTV Park Brake not working

Backing off is what I think someone did in the first place. Notice the "ed" for past tense in the post .;)

    LMTV Park Brake not working

Weak brain moment for me there. If they locked, they'd need to be caged too . Exhausting all air still good... but I'll stick by my first guessimate. and backed out adjusters:tin hat::smile:

    LMTV Park Brake not working

The park system circuit doesn't apply to the front axle, so truck could be stopping with front brakes only. Also, has the ip tried to release all the air from all the air tanks? That would be the acid test to whether it is a mechanical or air problem. With the system exhausted of all air, the...

    LMTV Park Brake not working

My guesstimate would be someone not familiar with air brakes and caging went in and backed out the adjusters to the shoes as to disable the brakes (rear service AND parking). Personally, I'd put the caging bolts in, but not tighten them. Then air the system to see if the bolts retract (extend...

My “new” Automotive Technik Ltd Pinzgauer 718K.

It has been a while since I've updated the photos here. The Pinz has participated in 3 parades, served as a modest camper at Mogfest and 1 car show, and these are all I have is from the Torrance Armed Forces parade last May, Mogfest in October and show

    FMTV High Speed Gears

Apples and Oranges! Completely different trucks. The only thing in common is the cab's sheetmetal. The empty Steyr 12M18 weighs in at around 13.5k lbs verses the M1078 at 18k. The Tires on the Steyr are smaller and lighter than the ones on on the FMTVs. As far as underpowered, European medium...

    batteries in lmtv?

You're just removing the 2nd 12 volt battery that is parallel from each high and low side of the 24v system. I did this when I got the FDT a year and a half ago. You are still retaining the 24v and the split 12v. IIRC, the unused lugs and cables for the 2nd batteries can be unbolted from the...

Know a good transmission mechanic in the Atlanta area for a M1078 ?

Do you think that maybe the truck doesn't like you? Don't think negative thoughts. FMTVs don't like negative vibes. :-D

    Front Cab Support M1078

These are the isolators. The upper is still made, the bottom is obsolete. And it was 2 years ago when I was told that, both from BAE and a commercial supplier. Unfortunately, I don't remember what I made the new ones from exactly, but know they were suspension bushings:???: . But you do need...

    Air brake question

The 2 way check valve is located on the back of the panel behind the washer reservoir (left side, behind the step). The valve is the top one of the 3. If you remove the front grille and trace the air line from the E gladhand through the tie wrapped bundle on the left side. Cut the tie wrap...

    FMTV High Speed Gears

DID is the word. Bronto was the Canadian name. When BAE Sealy closed, that was the end of production and only existing inventory is left. The last production trucks were for Canadian mining. Sold without warranty. According to a BAE engineer I had contact with, the mining companies were...

    FMTV High Speed Gears

LOL, It is called a SD Brazos. The commercial version of the FMTV. They were fitted with the 5.9. The CAT 3116 was used in Chevy/GMC Top Kicks / Kodiaks in the early '90s. I don't know what their mileage was, but application and setup dictates their efficiency. Over the Road trucks are geared...

    Air brake question

Oxyacetylene, Remove the front grille and trace the large air hose from the E gladhand back to the backside of the driver's step. Remove that air line from the 2 way valve. If air comes out, you found your problem. ;) I have learned to keep a few of those 2 way valves around (they're cheap and...

    Air brake question

I just resolved an issue on the FDT where air exhausted the front emergency gladhand with the system park released. Though the TM points to the bottom 2 way check valve of the 3 behind the driver's step, the top 2 way check valve was the one that ran directly to the gladhand. Once it was...
