Wow!
The picture of the 251 with the "lid" off is beautiful!
I've gone on three wild goose chases and bought two engines each time thinking (hoping) they were 265s but each time they turned out to be 251s. I'm still looking for a 265 crank and rods to go into one of my 251s but so...
Hello JT.
Yes, Red Horse was/is indeed an engineering outfit. I didn't know they were an Air Force outfit though. If memory serves me right, they were the guys that came in immediately after we lost a barracks or other building. They could put a hooch up in a very short time.
I've looked...
I have a theory on pump (fuel) settings.
My LDS engine came rebuilt and the fuel density compensator (FDC) disconnected/bypassed. I "think" they disconnected the FDC after the pump was calibrated instead of before.
If you want to maintain a stock fuel setting you have to turn down the fuel...
I installed a vacuum gauge under the steering column in place of the air breather warning devise on my deuce. Even with the LDS-1A engine the stock deuce aid breather pulls very little vacuum. The exact numbers are posted somewhere on the site but I can't recall what they are at this time. I...
Thanks for the input all. You've confirmed what I thought I already knew but put it in a context that made it clear. I had concerns about the hot spots but it never occured that the pump could cavitate.
I've ordered a 180 degree military style thermostat and a NOS winter front from John Bizal...
Not to break cadence with a light hearted thread but this morning I'm wearing my Captain Curmudgeon hat.
Concerning rank and reputation, there is one member that is so deep into post whoreing, obviously for the purpose of making rank, and shooting from the hip in his opinions that it is...
There are a lot of loggers up here where I live. Many have old equipment. No problem.
I agree with number-one needing a lubricity boost. To be safe (keep from walking and paying a big tow bill I'd rather run Nr-1, add lubricity (Marvel Mystery Oil) and suffer the reduced power and added cost...
I have concerns about a thermostat we installed in my M37 today.
I swapped the existing, stock 180 degree thermostat for a 195 degree unit because the engine wasn't heating up and I was about to freeze my "whatever" off.
As you may know, the M37 has a by-pass on the top of the water pump...
I'm running straight number one with a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil in a 50 gallon tank. A pint would probably do the trick but I don't plan driving the deuce (Rosie) much until spring and I'd rather be safe than sorry. When I was running a Nr 1 & Nr 2 50-50 blend I used a pint of MMO per tank...
I set the idle at 900 RPM. That may be considered high by some but I think it's easier on everything to idle them up.
In the winter when I let it idle to warm up I set the throttle at around 1,100.
When blocking off air flow to the fan with cardboard take care not to block off just the top of just the bottom or just the left side or just the right side. Doing so will put undue stress on the fan and water pump bearings.
IMHO an electric fan is the way to go.

Thank You! It was a lot more work that I thought it would be.
Rosie will be semi-retired for the winter. I drove her for two weeks steady and had no starting problems even at 15-below zero. When it gets colder you just gotta plug more stuff in. I just filler her with...
What started out to be a 28-day project ended up taking 37-days. The goal was to be finished by Thanksgiving but little "detail" work projects kept getting in the way. Wireing and painting took longer than expected. The cold weather destroyed the flash function on my Sony still camera so the...
When the convoys used to go through Saigon they would always run at the highest RPM, in the lowest gear possible to maintain their desired/required speed. The object was to make a lot of noise and be as imtimidating as possible in an attempt to keep both Charlie and civilians from daring to get...
Be VERY careful removing injectors. Someone suggested testing them. To do this requires a test stand --- not a measuring cup. Injectors operate at a pressure that will blow fuel clear through your hand. They can cause grave medical problems.
I agree with Jatonka.
As most of you know, I installed a LDS-465-1A 5-ton engine a year ago and I love it. The swap is simple and you do not want for power --- especially on a bobbed deuce. Since installing the LDS I've turned the main fuel setting DOWN 2 flats and the droop screw DOWN 1/4...
I'm also running the 1970 (5 micron - 28 GPM) spin on filters. There is also an amsoil bypass filter and a pre-lube system.
The Amsoil filter is shown in the attached picture. It's the black filter directly behind the ether bottle on the firewall. The pre-lub pump is shown the foreground...
The only reason I didn't originally go with the Jatonka filter system was because of the micron ratings. It wasn't until much later that I learned about the possible cold weather disadvantaes of Jatonka's filter system.
The Jatonka system greatly reduces dry start problems but IMHO it leaves...
