I don't know about the hard top... I recall it being just as leaky as the soft top :-)
I do think the airlift bumper and spare tire carrier are nice--though spendy. If you have access to tools, somewhere there's a PDF of the bumper and you can make your own out of a $100 section of 2x8x1/4...
Hey, when you're in the middle of the desert in Iraq, you do what it takes :-) Anyway, isn't that the Marine Corps motto: improvise, adapt, overcome?
To answer the question though, without access to some pretty serious machinery, it will be difficult to straighten that pin. Which is why I too...
I put the antennas on my truck today and got the VIC attached to the radio deck. Unfortunately, it's raining down buckets, so no photos. Maybe tomorrow.
I've thought about fabbing something like that, but the problem is that it precludes opening the tailgate. Plus I was worried about the weight of the wheel and tire on the tailgate hinges. Securing it isn't a big deal here in my little midwestern town, and even if I drive to the "big city"...
Thanks for the info. That's kind of what I was thinking of. I suspect that if I mount the spare hanging off the back I won't be able to get the truck to fit in our garage. I have my welding kit and tool boxes along the front wall, so it's already a kind of tight fit.
On an unrelated note, I...
I've seen some of those y-strap deals around, but the "normal" ones don't see to be big enough to get around the 37" tires. I suppose I could check an offroad supplier since they're more likely to have something that would fit these whopping big tires. I've thought about just mounting one of...
Thanks for the pic. Did you reinforce the bed somehow, or just bolt it through with washers? I'm still amazed by how heavy the wheels are (with run flats in them) so I'm curious... Also, did you mount it on the driver's side near the cab for better rear visibility?
I've not added an airlift rear bumper (yet) to my humvee, so at the moment my spare is just laying flat in the "bed" of my four-man soft top truck. However, that 160lb wheel and tire could be an unwelcome intruder into the cabin should I have to stop hard (currently it's tied to the tailgate...
I don't think you need the alodine if you use a good primer. It's a corrosion inhibitor/paint adhesion thing, and on well-cleaned bare aluminum it shouldn't be necessary to use that before primer.
My knowledge is mostly from auto-body painting classes I've taken at the college where I'm...
Paint doesn't like to stick to bare aluminum, so even for spot painting you should prime first. I've used zinc chromate primer (in a rattle can) on some rivets that were bare aluminum, then spot painted with the CARC-matching rattle can green/black paint. The most important thing, as with any...
It definitely comes on OK. And it usually doesn't stay on terribly long--last time I counted and got to about 10 before it turned off. I can see it in low light or at night, but when the sun's shining directly on it, I can't tell if it's lit or not. I guess I'll go for an LED replacement and see...
Another question, of course. :-D
Yesterday afternoon I went to pick my kids up from school in the truck. It happened to be parked in the driveway so that the sun was coming in from the rear and full on the dash. I couldn't for the life of me see if the wait light was lit or when it went out...
I did eventually find it in the TM, but it just shows the newer, tubular guard. Without sleeves. I'm going to go caliper the bolt and hole and see what I can come up with. I wonder if I could use a piece of bearing bronze tube to tighten things up...
Still going over the truck and finding little things... like the hood hinge pins that didn't have cotter pins in them.
Checking the brush guard (original style) I noticed that the bolts holding it on seem under sized. There's about 1/4" of wiggle and the retaining pins are hard to get in/out...
Just to wrap this up... turns out it was operator headspace error. Or as they sometimes said down at the motorpool, 'Problem exists between steering wheel and seat."
Turns out the 24-1/2 volts nominal across the two batteries didn't mean they were good. Or at least, it didn't mean they were...
Probably a dumb question, but....I'm used to alternators with an external/separate regulator (I'm into classic cars) but can't seem to locate just a regulator, either in the TM or online. Is it necessary to buy an entire alternator if the regulator is bad?
On a different note, if I buy the 200...
I was just where you are a few months ago (have wanted a humvee since I got out of the service many moons ago, but just got serious this year). The advice posted so far is good, especially thinking about what you want to do with it and investigating registration. For me, I plan to just drive...
So, in my fiddling around to solve my generator problem, I realized that the two civilian batteries under the seat are just loose in there :-x
What have you done to hold these down? I'll eventually switch to the correct batteries and hold down, but for the moment I need a solution.
