    Under Seat Storage

Doesn't sound familiar... but if he was in the 3/325 in the late 80s, I might have run into him.

    Easy alternator check

I looked the the TM and didn't see an obvious answer... The volt gauge is in the yellow when running and battery voltage shows 25 at the battery terminals. I was expecting 28v if the alt was charging. The old "hold a small piece of metal on the back to check field strength" thing didn't work...

the real cost of owning a HMMWV

Think of it as being similar to any older 4x4. If you can do maintenance and repairs yourself, it's not unreasonable. If you have to find and then pay someone to do it for you, it might be pretty expensive. I owned a 1931 Model A Ford for four years (which I commuted in--17 miles round trip...

    Under Seat Storage

Had an idea last night that I thought I'd post... I've been scratching my head about storing stuff under the rear seats. I don't recall that we ever had anything useful (except some chain and recovery gear) stored in them, because the insides get wet. So there's several cubic feet of storage...

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

I just want an A/N VRC-64--which is what was in the truck when I was driving it around Europe and the sandbox--and that's pretty steep. I can pick up a radio for a few hundred, but throw in the deck, the mount w/ power supply, antennas, and cabling and it's pushing 1k. Which is probably too much...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

I did wind up having to grind off the bolt head. Since that fat washer was on there, I managed not to scuff the paint on the tunnel. The rivnut fell right out onto the floor--it was rusty and probably could not have been tightened. I managed to get another 7/16 bolt through the hole from...

VPC (Vehicle Power Conditioner) for VIC-1

Meh, bad google-fu last night. Apparently I need an MX-7777 or equivalent. Is there any disadvantage to using a civilian 24v suppressor (aside from accuracy)?

    Rear seatbelt install problem

I could be mistaken, but I think that's how the seatbelts were installed originally. At least the TM doesn't show installing the rivnuts in order to bolt the seat belts down... And rivnuts are safe enough for aircraft use. At the size we're talking (7/16x20) I think they're sufficient...

    Another HMMWV saved in Germany

It looks great--but if you need to work on it, I think it will have to be in the driveway.:-P Congratulations and have fun!

VPC (Vehicle Power Conditioner) for VIC-1

Working on installing a VIC 1 in my M998. I see in the TM that there's supposed to be a VPC installed in the radio deck. A google search didn't return any useful results--I'd like to know this parts NSN (if it exists) and perhaps a source/alternative so I can get my system up and running. TIA.

    Rear seatbelt install problem

:-P Well, I've got one on order now. Not that I'll need it for this particular job, but I expect to need it again--maybe soon.

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Good idea about the chisel. I'll try that tonight.

    Splash shield bolt attachment

Sounds good. I might try a different bolt first, but I have access to big taps (up to 1-1/2") at school, so that will be my next step.

    Splash shield bolt attachment

So I have the under the hood jack stowage box and jack, but I'm having what I suspect is a nut problem again. The upper bolt that holds the splash shield on doesn't seem to grab once inserted into the section that the airlift loop is attached to. That piece is closed on the top, so I can't see...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Nope. From the underside, I can hardly reach it with a wrench, so there's no way to get the end of a TIG up in there. It's just too narrow and too far up. From the top, that big washer is in the way. Good idea though--that was my initial thought: take it over to the college's auto restoration...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Yeah, I was just at Fastenall and they didn't have a rivnut that large. On top of that, I'm pretty sure the HF tool doesn't go anywhere near that big. And I couldn't get the tool on the rivnut with the bolt still through it, in any case. I'm going to try and get a wrench up in there again, once...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

I think if I cut off the bolt (grab it with pliers and hacksaw off the head) the nut will just fall out. I hope.

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Oh, rivnuts! (That's a swear word, for sure) Guess a rivnut tool and set of inserts is on my list. I seem to vaguely recall someone saying buying the truck was only the beginning. :-) Just a few more thousand to spend until it's set up to my satisfaction.

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Thanks for the info. That's what I was afraid of. I don't think I can get to the inside of the tunnel without major disassembly--the frame runs right by there and there's about 1/4 inch of space between the frame and tunnel. It might have been possible to get the end of a wrench in there...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Like a bad penny, I'm back with another question. I got the rear seat belts installed this evening, but ran into a little problem that I can't seem to solve... On the passenger side, where the seat belt latch mounts to the tunnel, I can't get the bolt to tighten. It's just spinning. Looking...
