I'm pretty sure I've seen some sell pretty recently-maybe a month ago- on GL with tires mounted on them - the photos weren't really clear, but I remember being surprised they were selling the old split ring rims. You might keep an eye out
When you say split rim, what comes to mind for me is the old style locking ring wheel that isn't used much anymore. There were a lot of serious accidents. Maybe you can post some pictures of your wheels.

I recall that Harrison bought some of the nicest MK48 units that came out.
Also, FYI, I got a couple of the MK48A1 (NSN 2320-01-417-3180) front units & did a little research at the time. There doesn't seem to be many changes for the A1 version. The 2004 versions of TM 08780B-24P & TM...
I'd be inclined to go with RDUKW's recommendation. The transfer case would probably be easier than the transmission, but still a big job. And, the first time you do any repair is when you pay the price of the learning curve.
RDUKW, I remember your thread about the problem with the Allison in...
MK48 transfer case
Artisan & Suprman have correct part # & NSN for the MK48 transfer case – the ones in Nevada are for the Hemmt & very different. See photos
Both the transmission and the transfer case shift via a cable –see page 2-350 of TM 08780B-24P for diagram of trans and page 2-421...
How did it drive in the 1/4 mile to your driveway? Any weird noises? The jumping out of gear & grinding noises does sound more likely to be a transfer case issue than Allison. I haven't had any similar issues with MK48, so I don't have any great solutions to offer.
Have you tried putting it in...
You can download from post #4 unless it is some other TM you need. Also, Igor Chudov has done all of us a HUGE service by making over 4,500 TMs available @ http://www.liberatedmanuals.com
Thanks for posting these photos & information!
Is there a publication number on the instructions you refer to? Might be able to find it online & avoid the need for scanning.
The truck looks clean! I had a bunch of guys working for me that had Class A CDL licenses, but still almost always had vehicle towed so we could check it out thoroughly before driving it.
I have used Anaheim Towing for several years to recover various items and large vehicles including MK48s...
I missed this thread until today. GL has sold a few more MK48 FPU as scrap requiring mutilation- no parts harvesting, etc. A while ago Sandcobra posted that a bunch of MK48s in Albany were scheduled to be used for target practice. The trailers (RBU) sure have been going cheaper than they used...
it looks like the MK18A1 hook height is pretty close to your trucks'. The photo & data for this MK1077 bed are from the Prime Portal site. Shows height of 63.7" less a couple of inches to hook.
I've taken a preliminary look at putting the hook mechanism from MK18A1 onto a truck- seems like it...
I read an article where a guy moved the tires around to see if the out of round tolerances of wheels, tires & mounting could cancel each other out. Might be worth a try
