The short wheelbase is the factor that bothers me the most while towing. The short wheelbase will limit your speed and make 2 hands on the wheel and 2 eyes on the road imperative. I towed a car trailer loaded with a M1008 and got 8mpg over some mountains. If you have brakes on your trailer that...
Mine would loosen some but then would bind up on the rusty threads. I had pb blaster on them too. I used a big vise grips and then ground off the marks on the best ones to re-install. The heads on these bolts are larger than what I could buy at home depot and chevy says they are obsolete so I...
I took off 3 bumpers last summer and I agree it is a big pain. I used a torch on some of the rear bumper bolts but held the carriage bolt head with a vice grip on most, then used 2 cheater bars and hoped they would break and a few did. I reused the best ones after I smoothed off the edge and put...
I'm always late for work so mine is moving if its running, but I'm gentle on the pedal for the 1st mile. I can't see any harm for idling. I had an isuzu diesel that needed glow plugs that I let idle until I had time to replace them. I left it running while at work (8hrs)more than once. The body...
As long as you don't use the M101a2 in battle, I don't think the bumper will be ripped off a m1009. I use mine all the time and I have had it loaded, but I only go on paved roads. If you have ever removed a rear bumper from a M1009 you will find it is on there good. I'm guessing that since the...
I think the M1009 is a great all around vehicle. Axles are on the weak side, but only if you are a hard core offroad guy or are adding more horses under the hood. If you do break an axle they are cheap and easy to replace. Expect a steady routine of maintenance as with any vehicle over 20 years...
That must have been done as a joke. They weren't going to get anywhere with that.
The M1009 will tow alot more than a 1/4 ton trailer, but have good brakes on your trailer.
The only thing I would be worried about is why there is no title. I would make sure I have a title before I spend any time and money on it. If it was real cheap there may be a very bad reason for it not having a title. It seems that alot of these trucks get parted out especially for the axles...
Dash pads are always hard to find in good shape. Other than that get the military specific items. A good tailgate and working window, bumpers and brackets.
I used the Prodigy brake controller. They are the top of the line, can be mounted easily because they don't have to be horizontal and are basically plug and play. Mine cost $150, napa wanted $188. You might do alittle more shopping than I did and find it for less.
What I did on my M1009 was install a 6 pin receptacle to run electric trailer brakes and leave the 12 pin where it is. I used another set of connectors so that I can unplug the 12 pin and plug in my 6 pin and vice versa depending on what trailer I was using. Then plug in an unconnected set of...
