I have some parts that need to be brought to rally - was wondering if there is any mileage in starting a new thread (don't want to get posting lost in "date change" thread, or this "buy-sell-trade" thread as it's not really appropriate) just for S/S underground railroad/shipping - to/from rally...
Hi Steve and welcome. What was your trade? Assuming you are ex REME...
Land Rovers on this forum are a bit of a rarity, couple of 1 tonnes and a few lightweights.
As soon as you are able, how about some pics?
Howard (expat - Braintree, Essex.)
If either of you want these before the rally - to try out driving there(??..!), I can post them pretty cheaply - they're not heavy, I'm shipping one later today.
Gimp - Yes Moneypenny, that's the plan, shaken not stirred, though I'll be in a different vehicle!
........ and probably better than they were ever done in the military (??).
I thought over/under spray was more authentic, especially in a combat theatre? Unless of course they were done freehand with a brush.
Clarification required.
M816 rear winch "Roller ponding" - Fix
Had forgotten to post these from some time ago. My solution was to extend the grease fitting then caulk the void:
I/Fittings. II/Fittings installed in roller. III/Roller test fit in frame. IV/Cap in place. V/Masked nipple for painting (Nipple will be...
Been discussed before :

... but I had forgotten to update the thread.
Not for crane use (must use shackle for that), but for recovery use, choker hold can be used if you shove a load of grass or a couple of sticks in the choke. These will compress but will also swell back a bit and can be pulled out piece meal. Also softer "upside the head" if sling gives way!
Minor update - A local highway dept has just acquired an A3 from Germany (??) and will be pulling the winch/fifth wheel to make a plough truck. Anyway - I got a good look at the winch tower/remote lines and found that the High/Low speed valve as on the A1/A2's has a third 'Aux' position which...
Some more. (NB. All "duh statements" included for neubs reading thread in the future.)
Service line to trailer disconnected, it crosses winch line path. Note scrap wood 'gunplank' on tail of trailer and tail of gooseneck (pic 3) to protect winch cable.
Needed dunnage/wood just incase the fuel...
20 ton NORCO bottle jacks (no handle) Genuine Bii kit - Made in USA........... $65

More pics..
Lined up for a gentle up hill pull onto the trailer over the rear wheels.
Pushing down really hard to hide the civi trailer on a high military fifth wheel. Also the Pete is 10' tall.
For a change, here's a thread where the ex-mil truck does the recovery of a civi one...
Just had some mates over and got to play with the winch on my '16A1.
For those that are interested, this Pete is a little special as it has a factory Detroit 12V71 - twin supercharged V12 2-stroke diesel...
Yup, was a great show - we hung out with the Ward owner (they are actually designated 6 ton "Heavy Wrecker") as one of the guys that came over from the UK has one also (him and I toured Normandy in it for the 50th).
Spoke to this guy as well, he worked it up until a few years ago in NJ I...
Flame out on way home
I had put out all the flames, but it was still smoldering as the chaps arrived.
Pic 1 - fire confirmed out, hub cooled off
Pic 2 - Loads of fire trucks, must have been a boring day at the stn
Pic 3 - Gone almost as quick as they arrived - foam left on road.
Pic 4 -...

I'd appreciate anyone who wants to fill in the gaps - it will help focus my gray matter.
Steve; - yes, you were correct, I was "glad you meet me" (your quote)...
Craig (Bigsarge...); - (apparently pronounced Kreg) .... I think you need to buy a tent before you get a truck.

Great event - was nice to make it out there for the first time and meet with a load of SS names and put faces to them.
Tiz a shame that I brought the wrong pickup for the vast pile of stuff Gimp and Dave collected for me.... had a rumble...
