Next question for the experts here. I am almost at the stage where I would remove the old 3 speed tranny. I have the dog house off, exhaust cleared, drive shafts out and just have to disconnect the little things.
When you remove the tranny, do you need to support the engine? It looks like the...
One other comment I have to the above while changing your buld - check your grounds on each light if you have anything weird, like lights out, dim, etc. Many of mine were heavily corroded and did all kinds of weird things. I had to change ground wires, bolts on both rears. The front grounds were...
Gosh, every time I come to this site I find more stuff to spend $ on. I noticed the price on Fleabay from the link went up but the price on their private web site was not yet raised. So I figured I would go ahead a bit and I snagged one for the lower price. rofl
I have two rooms full of parts...
I free admit I am a newbie, and I have two silly oil change questions as my next oil change in coming up soon. M998.
Last time I changed the oil, I finished up and started the engine to let it cycle before I checked the oil and discovered that the brand new pristine oil on the dip stick was...
Not to hijack your thread - but is there a "budget" place (hahaha) to by the DWF kit? Lowest cost I could find was $425 plus $100 shipping. Considering adding DWF when I replace the exhaust...
I went through this last spring. This should help you. I just used hoses from a local auto parts store. I took them a sample and matched it up to what they had on hand. The "Complete" kit I purchased was not very complete and the heater hoses and bypass hose was not present and wrong.
Found...
I will post this information in case it might be helpful to anyone else. The part number of the bearing they sent as a replacement was 3130-01-203-9870 and that is indeed what I needed. After receiving the correct carrier bearing, I found the instructions at this link were not quite workable...
The one I received has part number 2520-01-356-9189 - was supposed to be for front drive shafts for 92-04 with 4 speed - which I think is the longer front driveshaft that I got with my 4L80.
OE/OEM Part Number:
2520-01-189-2135 5-213X 5306-01-190-5760, 5340-01-190-0807 2-70-18X

I can really use some help with the installation of the front drive sfat carrier bearing please. The rebuild kit I got looks a bit different over the one that was on the front shaft. I tried looking at the TM's but cannot see what I need - an exploded diagram on the right way to install the...
Well this is turning into quite the adventure. I managed to find a US made carrier bearing rebuilt kit so I managed to avoid all the Chinese crap.
The two of us tried pulling the half shafts apart but we are total weaklings and while we could get it to the point to see the splines, but it...
So I just have to pull the two half shafts apart. Yeah, I'm a weakling. Maybe a tug of war using the driveshafts using the local high school football team!
Why do I have a feeling that if I do manage to get it apart it is not going to go back together very easily!
Thanks for the advice!
Another dumb question. I need to replace the front drive shaft carrier bearing. I got a replacement ordered. The TSM says the staft just pulls apart? It lenghens and shortens but won't pull apart for me. Does the dust cap unscrew to get it apart?
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but my cover got shredded in Hurrican Ian.
First, I got the VERY black outdoor expensive cover from one of the well known Humvee parts vendors with the "tax". It was ripping with only 6 months of use! So stay away from this overpriced garbage!
So now I...
Thanks for all the help. I think I now have most of the parts needed to properly do the 4L80 conversion. I got a nice rebuild stock torque converter instead of using that rusty one. Got a new pan with drain, gasket and new filter. Got the TPS that goes along with the new harness and tranny...
Thank you for all the advice!
Post storm, I went outside and accessed the damage. Mostly minor thankfully. Others not so lucky here.
I started it up and tried putting it in drive and it moved perfectly. Self healing :clinto:
Took it for a short drive as they closed all the roads and all...
Yeah, kind of. I don't feel the engine load up, but I do feel the tranny shift. Guess I could disconnect the gearbox linkage and just manually move the lever on the gearbox and try it again.
Hard to do while it is sitting on a fair incline. I don't want to overfill it. I got to figure a way of...
Yes, the engine revs. No, I do not feel it load up. But I can definitely feel the tranny shift between N to D and N to R. That seems normal. But I did not want to go over 1500 RPM fearing I might break it worse.
I should have stated that the M998 was flat bedded, not towed with the wheels on...
Once again I need the advice of the collective as I might be seeing something HMMWV specific.
Back in July, my batteries failed and I had to have the M998 towed home. Since the batteries were replaced, it has been sitting unmoved.
Fast forward and now I wanted to make sure it was in shape to...
