Step 1 in my soon-to-be-done differential replacement is complete. I had obtained an Eaton locker earlier this year, and with the help of a Kobalt high-torque battery impact wrench and the hoist in the bed of my M1081, yanked the spider gears and dropped the locker in their place. My biggest two...
I love that AZ still exempts AWD/4WD vehicles from the rollers. Many years ago (about 20), I got annual exemptions for my M35. They didn't like me at the inspection station on east 22nd near Pantano in Tucson. Living 35 miles outside Colorado Springs, and now Fallon, NV, have exempted my M1081...
Today I took a seven hour drive through mountains and desert of North-Central Nevada. Went through Carrol's Summit east of Fallon, then back south through Dixie Valley, part of the Navy weapons range out here. Lots of parked vehicles that pilots are supposed to find and identify. I know of at...
Right - without the extra rear leaf, softer rear suspension especially without a normal load. And removing the shocks allows defining suspension travel limits. That can be done without driving - somewhere I've got an old book on setting up suspensions for race cars. Race trucks are the same...
If you want cheap, small and relatively powerful, just get a new Raspberry Pi and an external keyboard and monitor. You can do a lot with these and they're just as powerful as a 12 year old laptop.
PM me if you want help
Apologies for delay i response. The seats were already removed from the donor car, were selected out of the junkyard warehouse so I don't know what year they are. Based on condition, maybe 10 years at most. Only indication is "SI" embroidered on the seat back. I think $100-150/seat but in...
OK, I'm seriously jealous of what you're doing. While I don't need the cage and such, I'd love to be able to move across the Nevada desert trails at more than a crawl. Please keep this thread up to date with your mods especially with suspension.
And I love Tucson, lived there ten years -...
The crane is just like a engine puller crane - it has a hand-pump self-contained hydraulic cylinder. instead of the legs and casters on the ground of the engine puller, the post is on a bearing and can pivot 360 degrees.
I glom'ed this photo from the seller's site (Northern Tool part number...
I agree with Green Mountain Boys - if you can, anchor the free end of the cable and move the truck to unspool. Otherwise, it will be a real fight. I know for certain, most of my time using the SRW has been in cold weather either recovering myself or other vehicles. Unspooling is a real PITA...
I had a steel plate welded to the top of a piece of 4" square tubing, about 12" long, that fits into the pockets in the bed of my M1081. There is a thick piece of rubber between the plate, and a hole drilled in the post for the pin in the pocket. On top of that, I bolted an Ultra-Tow hydraulic...
I spotted a red MTV fire truck in Fallon, NV about three weeks ago. Unfortunately I was rushing to the local hospital with injured girlfriend. Girlfriend burned her feet at Soda Lake spectating while I was in discussion with local Sheriff Officer on recovering a vehicle from the lake later that...
Pics coming soon - but several days ago helped my local Sheriff Office recover an old pickup truck from a former open mine/now lake. Pickup truck had been shot up significantly, and Sheriff was concerned it was part of a criminal case. I needed all 300+' of my SRW and extra straps to get down...
Today was a beautiful day in northwest Nevada. First open day at Lake Lahontan State Park, a local reservoir used by boaters, fishermen, picnickers, sunbathers. Churchill County Search and Rescue, of which I am a member, spent the day patrolling the beach, assisting Park Rangers, and helping out...
Light bar in place of rotating beacon: The beacon is a single bulb and motor, not a lot of amperage draw. My light bar is an "old school": four 50w 12v bulbs and rotator motors. IIRC, 4x50w=200w. 200w/12v=nearly 20 amps, then add in motors. Too much for continual use, my circuit breaker would...
I just noticed, you're lucky and have the 11k hydraulic self-recovery winch (SRW). It's a somewhat rare and very handy tool to have in your arsenal when off-road.
I'm jealous, your truck is much prettier than mine and has a bunch of upgrades.
Funny, I did nearly the same drive a year ago in my M1081 with factory gears. Colorado Springs to Fallon, NV. Yes, 50 is very scenic but nobody on the road. Fill up every chance you have just in case, holler if you have problems.
Watch the weather - when I drove out last May/June, I got snow...
Based on my experience and documented on the site - you've got a spring in that spring brake chamber that has broken and punctured its diaphragm. Could possibly be dry rot only without a broken spring too. When spring brake button is pushed, air pressure into the spring brake chamber applies...
Springs in the spring brake chambers (two per wheel) break and puncture the diaphragm. You push the knob on the dash for the spring brakes, pressure should override the spring in the chamber, pushing the diaphragm and releasing the brake. With the punctured diaphragm, the spring brake will not...
