Respectfully, I will have to disagree on the 60 front statement. All 4x4 1 tons (they started in 77) got the 60 front right up to the body change. The V30 and V3500 got them up to 1991.
I don't think overdrive is the answer. It will make an empty truck faster but you probably won't have the power to tow in OD. If you need towing power on the cheap, sadly, a 454 gasser might be the answer.

What a great way to get to know your new truck. I have owned about 10 deuces and every one tbat could have been driven, was driven home. Those that couldn't, rode the towbar. Congrats on a flawless recovery.
