What I'm saying is that the Lucas is thicker and provides more cushioning action between all metal to metal contact. I DO NOT suggest the synthetic Lucas additive because it is not as thick. Just use the standard stuff. Two quarts of standard Lucas oil stabilizer:$26, 1 gallon 80-90wt gear oil...
Given enough time oil will creep up and out no matter how long the lines are. This is the same action that oil creeps up the dipstick on engines with. It really isn't any worse than just a short breather in place of a long line. Even if the line is full of oil it'll work fine because the oil...
Yep, find a spare. When you get it, open up the top cover and look at all the gears and such. If any have broken teeth, keep it and find another spare as well. Just make sure you have all the parts you would need if anything breaks. Two spares should be enough I would think.
Just a suggestion: Drain your transmission, add two quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer, top off with fresh gear oil, then take a drive. You'll be surprised how much quieter it is just from that.
I did take some pictures with my phone. I will post them up when I can get around to it. I did get it fixed, all back together and test driven by around 10pm tonight. Glad I had the parts I needed. Ended up using the whole loaded mainshaft, mainshaft bearings, and topcover from the donor...
Failure identified: pulled the teeth off of the fifth gear slider. Hub seems to be fine. Already pulled the main shaft from my parts transmission and prepared for the swap and then the sky opened up... If I could just repair my truck once without it raining on me... Anyway, I SHOULD be back up...
Just be careful. Have you ever seen what happens when a driveshaft comes apart running down the road? Even at relatively low speeds it can and usually does destroy the transfer case, floor pan ( bottom of deuce bed) air tanks, parking brake assembly, could get the fuel tank, and could crack the...
If you are unsure, the best and safest option is to pull it out and bring it to a driveshaft shop for inspection and repair. It could (and probably will) save you money in the long run.
The 2.5 ton with M35Tom's power steering kit and overdrive kit is what you need. And I second the idea of the S280 shelter in the back of the truck with an M105 trailer for equipment and supplies hauling. You should check out 59apache's camper build thread. It has everything you would need...
