Great museum! I was there about 20 years ago, and the only truck at that time was the CCKW pumper. The B17 was just put on display. The CCKW wasn't restored at that time and I seem to remember it being grey with red wheels.
M211 GMC
Thanks for the update and your time and effort.

You're absolutely right on the low range. I've never done it but was told if converting to a manual trans to use a manual shift t.case from a CCKW. Seems like a lot of work and I don't know how well it would hold up.
Just checked the manual and it says 11 qts. for the crankcase,(coulda swore Dave was right with 12) and approx. 16 qts for the trans BUT to go by the markings on the stick and don't overfill as it can cause erratic shifting and oil leakage. There's a detailed description of draining and...
The rearview mirror could be original. Two of my parts trucks (M211 and M135) have a small one mounted in the center of the windshield frame. Both trucks are '52. As small as the mirrors are, I can't see them being much use, and with anything but the bare cargo bed with the tailgate down, about...
Seems to be a good looking truck, with or without the back window. It takes a fairly substantial hoist to pull the power pack as a unit, but I would think you could pull the trans with a good tranny jack and a little "engineering". Just be carefull as these things are heavy and a smashed finger...
I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but I don't see the problem with letting people on this forum know what's up for auction. I wasn't aware that auctions were a secret so that a few individuals could get a "deal". If I'm bidding on something and someone goes higher, it's theirs.! That's why they...
Sorry, but I figured I might be helping someone on the board that might have missed the stuff in Indiana. Didn't mean to drive anyones prices up, won't do it again.
RE: Lots of Military Vehicles on GSA site in MO - ends Jan 1
There's also 5 1/2 pages of surplus in Indiana, from sleeping bags and parkas to trailers and tools. I think this one is ending on the 15th also.
It seems a lot of these old rigs didn't have outriggers. I have a '43 IHC M5-H6 with a Quickway and a '56 Bantam T35 and niether unit has them. The Bantam, even though it was built in '56, still uses a CCKW drivetrain. I've seen the M211 based Bantams, and have never figured out just where they...
Depends on what your plans are for it, but there were a lot fewer of the 6x4 CCW's built than the CCKW 6x6. Seems to me that all CCW's were closed cab, but I could be wrong. I would say it's definately a desireable and somewhat rare truck.
RE: I
Good to have you back! The bows on my 5 ton were pretty bad, but with a little time and a solid vise, I put a smooth curve in them. Otherwise, if yours are too badly bent, I'm sure Saturn or Memphis would have them. Good luck with everything.
On most pto's, you can remove the shifter assembly and be able to look up inside. Like 73m819 said, loose is better. Too much backlash still isn't a good thing, but too little will destroy both gears. The metal from the damaged gears goes through trans and can do a lot of damage.
RE: I installed PTO on my M813 and now it
Don't drive it! The pto is too tight with just silicone for a sealer. There has to be .006 to .012 (six to twelve thousandths) of an inch backlash between the drive gear in the trans and the driven gear in the pto. You can set it by "feel" (guess) or on...
Good one Chuck, You planning on driving it home or use a towbar? rofl
Seriously, if it were closer, I have a set of 5 ton axles that would look good under there.
Not so much driving over that cracks it, though it can, it's putting all the weight of the front axle on a bottle jack that causes problems. I'd agree with the 4" minimum with fiber or rebar. Also depends on what you have for a base under the crete. Not an expert, just learned the hard way over...
