No, it's not a deuce, it's way better and a he11uva lot more expensive than a deuce! I've wanted a 'track since I was a kid watching Combat starring Vic Morrow (not reruns) in the mid '60s. Good lord, do I feel old! You've a good looking machine there and should be proud of the work you've done!
Never used Gillespie primer, but I always use synthetic enamel reducer for one part primers. It gives the primer a faster dry time and never had a problem. I usually topcoat primer when dry to the touch, a couple hours or so should be good. Again, not an expert, just done it a lotta years.
$12000 is way too high for a multifuef 5 ton! With the heater, new tires, good paint, overall a clean truck I'd say $5 to $6000 would be a fair price, but then I'm cheap!
Don't think I've ever heard of a manual shift for a 5 ton t-case but I wish there was such an animal. That and a set of front lockout hubs would be a nice setup!
I've driven several trucks with 3208's over the years, most with poor maintenance, and they held up great. I just wanted to add to the above that they were designed as a medium duty engine and will not hold up to steady, over the road use. That's what the big dogs were designed for. Any piece of...
RE: frames
On the M39 series the dump and tractor have a 167" wheelbase, the cargo, dropside cargo and medium wrecker have a179" wheelbase and the expansible van, long cargo, bridge, tractor wrecker and bolster truck are 215" wheelbase. The medium wreckers have a rigid walking beam suspension...
The 6602 is a heavy, slow turning,(manual says 2,800 rpm) high torque engine. Seems to me you'd be way better off adapting a big block gas engine already designed to do what you have in mind. The 6602 is an awesome engine that has the abillity to twist off driveshafts, but it's kinda like an old...
It takes synthetic enamel paint a long time to cure, and it really isn't a very tough coating. Depending on temp., I'd guess 2 to 4 weeks to get as hard as it's going to get. I'm no expert, just what I've picked up along the way.
RE: The two oldest boys bought their first duece!
Congrats, looks like your boys have a pretty decent truck! Hang in there, have fun and keep it rollin'! :driver:
Way to go, looks like it's pretty much complete. If you need any help with info on the truck, there's this website started by a guy named Chris...... rofl (sorry, I couldn't help it)
The cummins won't fit (or any other long 6 cylinder) in an M39 series truck without serious modification. The 800 series truck had a longer nose to accomodate the longer engine. I guess we were thinking you were talking about an 800. As for brakes being crap, how come? I've never had a problem...
You're right with the Cat being expensive, but you won't find a better engine. I seem to remember the Cummins 350/400 are longer than a 250 and will bring on more mounting problems. Don't get me wrong here, Cummins builds a good engine and it looks like I might be driving a 400 in a binder this...
As long as the dogs don't have fleas or any other known parasites, that truck would almost be worth it! If I tried to buy it I'd be out in the snow 'cause she'd get the dogs from the divorce just keep me from having a place to sleep.
Good point, and well taken. But even crappy antifreeze will keep you from finding a busted block when it's -10 and you suddenly realize you screwed up.
