Adding a proper liftgate would really improve the usability, and solve the problem of getting people into the bed.
Especially those disabled and in wheelchairs...

The sprag works kinda like a "Chinese finger puzzle": The harder you pull, the tighter it gets.
And yes, it slips when there is no need for it, as when the rears and front are at the same speed.
Remember, there are two sets of them in there, one for forward motion, the other for reverse.
The...
A buddy of mine has an M35A2, a parade queen.
He put in an inch thick steel slab, covering the entire bed.
Now he can haul 'guests' in the back without giving them spinal fractures.

Loss of air on an Air-over-hydrualic system will not kill the brakes, just the boost.
Actually, a fail-safe aspect from that point of view.
As stated, most brake failures are the result of neglect.

PS...Your '53 axles are Timkens, long before Rockwell took over the building of them.
Good questions, possible I can relate some good answers.
The sprag system will allow up to a bit over 5% rotational slip before it locks in the front axle. 6% is the target for action.
It really doesn't care what you are doing as far as driving goes, all it looks for is the loss of rear...
A 5-ton tractor with the 6602 will average some 3mpg bobtail on the highway.
That, and it has to be gas for fuel. No used oil. Drat.
On the good side, if you are not going to drive a lot, it does have a mean rumble (over 100 cubes per cylinder), and plenty of torque. Around 235 horsepower...
The Harbor Freight 12K winch is very strong, if you use real copper cables for it (they come with plated aluminum wire).
The problem with all planetary gear winches is the holding brake, located inside the drum axle.
They wear out fast if you use it to pay out under load a lot, like pulling...
Got youngins? Maybe this would work to your advantge:
A buddy of mine rigged an alternator to an old bicycle, to power/charge a little battery in turn hooked to the TV set.
They want to watch something? They have to pay with exercise.
DG
The stock 60A alternator uses an 'on' command 24-volt wire from the ignition switch.
That would be the first place to test. If it is hot with the engine running, and no charging occurs, the alt is probably shot. Most failures are with the internal regulator. If it is the usual model, the...
