As woopyass said, they do make a manual valve body for the 4L80E. This means you will have to manually shift the gears all the time OR you can get a controller for it, so it can be electronically controlled (more expensive than the MVB). I would go with the 4L80E definitely. I swapped one...
I went through the same decision and went with an A2. My reasoning was this: The A3, in my opinion, does not have a significantly better powerplant, and parts are not nearly as easy (and cheap) to find.
As ken said, re-route the exhaust to the rear of the truck and add a muffler. That's what was done on my 1st deuce, and it was a lot quieter than my D-turbo one. That being said I wish I had a C-turbo instead and would not change the exhaust at all. I like it loud.
Update:
The wicks came in the mail yesterday. I installed one and put everything back together. The heater fired right up and runs great. Thanks cranetruck.
I might need to re-route the heater exhaust though. It appears to be getting sucked up by the heater fan and blown into the cab...

Those are some pretty crazy prices from SW. You would...

Has anybody had any luck with obtaining replacements from Stewart Warner? I imagine I won't be able to get a hold of anybody there until after Thanksgiving.
Has anybody been able to get replacement wicks for the South Wind heater? I took mine apart last week and found the wick to be in bad shape (broken/charred) along with the vaporizor (??) that it is attached to. I tried calling South Wind but have not been able to get ahold of anybody there...
