There is a retention tab that locks the connector on.
Also, the tabs are just held in place via screws, so you can unscrew the nut, remove the tabs, and use the existing ring connectors if you choose.

I dunno about NC, but I've seen enough cases in the few times I've had to be in court, that if you show up in court with reg/insurance/etc they usually look at it as 'lesson learned' and toss it.

Yup.. I hated MD.... Full size pickup towing a trailer with lawnmower and weedwhacker and OMGZ all **** breaks loose, but 80 y/o grandma driving a converted MCI pushing 45ft and near 50k lbs and she's just fine on her regular license she's had since the 60's....
