You can gain a couple more inches getting rid of the super singles and going to 11:00-20's , but you still got the exhaust and air intake to deal or reroute them .
Probably like anything it depends on how you maintain them , if you don't grease them regularly they won't last.
Edit ; With a lot of fording or deep mud it could be prone to early failure from debris getting past the rubber gasket , that wouldn't be a issue with solid rubber ones.

That was a state of the art brake system in 1949 why would it need a upgrade , just because you moded the truck to go a 30 - 40 % faster than it was designed in the 1950's ?
The air compressor runs off a belt not electric . It will probably run it ,but you better have a pile of replacement altenators and batteries around , because they won't last.

They rarely do . It sounds like a fork or bearing problem . Have you downloaded the TM's and looked through the trouble shooting section ?

It has probably been run low on oil causing internal damage .
Since he has made no attempt to look at it , it could be something as simple as a pin out of the linkage . So it is just a big guessing game until he provides basic information on what he has checked. Since it is too cold to look at it , it would be a good time to read the TM's and search some...
