I shift the front axle in and out while moving. The front driveshaft being driven by the tire and front diif, so it is turning the same speed as the rear driveshaft. Unless you are turning a sharp corner, or spinning the rear tires. There is no shock then, since there is no relative motion...
Mine are too warm to leave my hand on for 5 seconds. This is on the M108 which has 7,000lbs of extra weight. On the regular M35 they are just lukewarm. All these bearings have checked/replaced, repacked, and new seals. If they are all the same temp, I don't worry too much. But on a unknown...
To get even further off topic, most home style compressors use 1/4 fittings and regulator that restrict the air flow. I've replumed a couple to have 3/4 fittings to 1/2 connector. That with a 1/2 hose will get your air tools to run much better.
You would need a really short towbar to put both pivots at the same spot, and still be able to lift. I measured the hook at 28in from the pintle with the boom retraced. With different pivots, on the corners the hook would be pulled sideways, and raise the towed truck some. It would also...
How to make a M108 a wrecker. Got some chain adapters for the towbar, so had to try them out. Hooked up the M35 to the back and picked it up. Didn't hook up the brakes or safety chain, just took it around the country block to see how it would do. Used my wire adapter to hook the lights...
Couple of cons. Dot 5 doesn't absorb water. Any mositure that gets in will settle at the lowest point, or wheel clyinders in a deuce, and cause rust. Rubber seals swell a little with dot 3, and less prone to leak. Dot 5 can be cheap, but only by buying 1 gallon surplus cans. More expensive...
I shift through the low range a lot. Trucks tend to be in low range anyways from backing in the barn. And it helps the heavy M108 get going. Also easier to use low range 2cd to start since it has synco's.
I've bent both mudflaps two years in a row at haspin. I think I know where, it is the same spot as gimpy's avatar pic. Gets really angled through there.
Back when I drove a band around in a old school bus I had to do the same thing. Came over a hill on the interstate and had a semi stopped in my lane with nothing in front of him. It was snow covered also. I never heard 16 people get that quiet as when I set the bus sideways sliding around...
Just drop the pan and see if the rods have any play in them. It will be obvious which one is knocking. Took me about 2 hours to drop the pan on the mulitfuel and have it back up.
