    20 Ton Crane

Elwinil: Detroits, properly built by a competent mechanic, will not leak oil. We have three (8V-71, 8V-92, 6V-53) that do not. They are an excellent engine, much misunderstood. I would choose them over others most every time. Power and torque curves are much better. No head gaskets to blow...

    20 Ton Crane

Eric: Thanks, I didn't realize it was that close. I will stop in on my way to Milwaukee next trip. Regards Marti

    Just Curious

All of our deuces and 5 tons have been very reliable. We have not experienced the wrenching all of the time scenario with any of our trucks. These trucks are well built, and when you need to work on them, they are easy to work on. My son built a modified LDS 465 to put in his latest deuce. He...

    20 Ton Crane

Eric: What power units are in this crane? I have a 6V-53 Detroit with an Allison automatic mounted on a frame as a self-contained unit with a large gear box behind it. The Allison has four forward gears and two reverse. We have been told it came off a crane or winch of some kind. Thanks Marti

    Detroit Desiel 353 Issues

No other changes are necessary. Just be sure the fuel system is clean, and also be sure the copper tubes the injectors fit into are clean where the bottom tapered end of the injector fits. There can be carbon there that needs cleaned out before putting in a new injector. When you are ready to...

    Detroit Desiel 353 Issues

In reference to the gentleman with the John Deere with a 2-53, your hard starting problems are not caused by the exhaust valves as there was only one size. However there were early engines built with 2 larger valves and later engines with 4 smaller valves which gave better performance. However...

    Detroit Desiel 353 Issues

Pull off the valve cover and look at the little disc on the injector heads. There will be a letter and number there. The older series injectors like the "S" series had low pop pressure, causing hard cold starting and smoke. Try to go to "N" series injectors, which pop at a much higher pressure...

    Injector lines..R/R or repair?

If the leaks at the fittings are not caused by cracked lines, the problem can be caused by someone over-tightening the nuts. This deforms the fitting on the end of the line to the point it will no longer seal. Good lines should only be tightened enough to stop leaking. Regards Marti

    How many 5 Tons?

We have 7 trucks: 3 dumps, 1 bridge truck, 1 long wheelbase cab and chassis, one wrecker, one tractor Regards Marti

When do lockers outperform tire chains?

No one has mentioned snow and ice. In my experience, chains are the best for these conditions when off- road predominantly. I try not to run long distances on-road with them. Regards Marti

    Where to get ether bottles?

I got mine at NAPA, but I do not remember how much it was. Most farm equipment dealers have them also. Regards Marti

How much breather blow-by is too much??

Concerning your question about how much blow-by, all of our engines have what I will call a gentle flow of vapor out of the tubes at idle. I like to do a quick check by putting my thumb over the end of the tube for several seconds. If pressure develops, then there is compression getting past the...

How much breather blow-by is too much??

The drop tubes from the metal breather tube by the turbo on all of our trucks is just a nylon cord reinforced rubber hose piece, probably oil compatible, about 18" long, pushed over the end of the metal breather tube and retained with a hose clamp. Regards Marti

    Conventional motor oil

All of the trucks we have bought have had "10W-40" stenciled on the pre-heater cover. We do not wish to experiment with anything other than that weight due to possibility of damage. We use our old standby Rotella-T 15-40. The new International engines in the State Highway trucks my son works on...

    Exhaust in the cab

My son and I do not get it unless the wind is from an unfavorable direction. It would be good to check for leaks, though to be sure. You should see them as black smoke marks on a pipe or joint where the leak is. If K1 means kerosene, be sure to put some lubricant in your tank to keep the pump...

Simple question abt fuel pumps-5 ton

My 5 ton multifuel dump truck, tractor, and wrecker trucks have no pump in the right hand tank, but have an electric transfer pump mounted by the left end of the battery box. It is controlled by a toggle switch on the dash with indicator light when fuel is to be transferred from the right tank...

    E85 fuel

All responders have made good comments about the ethanol situation. Sugar cane is now being considered as one of the potential highest yielding sources. I am a farmer, too, and there are many issues about it that bother me. Articles in Successful Farming and Time magazine have pointed out...

My 5 Ton already earning its keep!!

The tractor tires appear to be like the Dyna Torques on my Massey Ferguson 1100. Very aggressive tread, about two turns of the wheel and you are on the drawbar. Been there, done that too often! As a farmer I have to wonder why some guys take their trucks out hunting ways to get stuck. We deal...

    Helped a woman in distress

Good job, Steve! Too many people are too wrapped up in their own busy schedule to help others. I have pulled many out of snow banks and ditches along roads. I never ask for $, most will offer though. The police wave a military vehicle on through even though roads are shut down due to...

    License Plate Light

I have never had any of that kind of trouble here in northern Indiana. Picky yo-yo, wasn't he? I love it when they do that kind of stuff and drug deals are going down all around them. Did he ticket you? We beat nuisance things like that here by keeping insisting on our right to a jury trial...
