You can also pull power off of pin 16 on your dimmer switch. That will provide power when your service drive lights are on. Use a "Y" adapter to connect the aux light power to main power and switch.
She really is awesome and willing to jump into projects with me.... of course she's extra awesome because I tend to be a.... jerk... when I'm deep in a project and she just works right along and forgives me later...

My 2cents :
I prefer to do my repairs off the vehicle on a bench or table that allows me to lay out tools and parts. That prevents accidental drop/loss of parts and its a LOT harder (not impossible, though) to forget tools in your engine bay.
occasionally unspool it, flex it out and retension under load as @Jeepadict stated. That will prevent the line from knifing under layers when you have to use it.
