To test for any "splitting" in the transfer case, do this on level ground: Jack up both rear axles and put them on appropriately sized jackstands with the wheels just off the ground. If you truck has air shift, engage it, for a sprag clutch truck do nothing. Put the truck in gear and drive off...
It would be nice if they told you WHY the EUC approval was never granted, instead of just leavng you wondering.
At least you're getting your money back.
Sometimes with horn and wire in the steering column problems, it is just better to bypass the whole mess and add one of those Pep Boys horn buttons to the steering column with hose clamps, and run a wire though the firewall. My dad and I did this on a WWII jeep years ago and it worked great.
Sweet truck. It looks like you have an unpolished gem there. I love the M211's - it was the first army truck I got to ride in as a kid.
I would probably trade my M35A2 for a nice M211 or one of the other models in the series.
The Northern California MVCC is a great group. I'm a little out of their geographic range in SoCal, but a lot of the southern guys go to the Northern groups spring and fall events.
Great to have another SO-CAL guy. Can you shove a deuce between your house and the neighbor's house? That's what I do. Of course, I warn them everytime I am going to start the truck.
We moved some big planes with dueces once. Here is an excert from an article I wrote for our club newsletter:
The B-29 had sat in an open field for many months, developing flat spots in the foam filled tires, and also sinking slightly into the field. One deuce could not move the load, and we...
Is the valve handle removeable? If yes, can't you just put the selector valve in the correct position, and then remove the handle? This way, no one can move it to the position where no line is hooked up.
When you get the other tank fixed, you can just put the handle back on.
My personal feelings are that I am not a fan of bobbing. However, if someone must cut up a truck, then I think they should at least cut up a common truck.
Only about 10% of all deuces are M36's, and in my opinion, it would be a shame to bob one.
Used this tool for a stock deuce with 9.00-20 tires and came up with this remarkably accurate result:
RatioTire HeightSpeedAuto*AOD*Manual*5 Speed** Auto = D in an AOD
* AOD is calculated at .70 transmission ratio
* manual = 4th in a 5 speed
* 5 speed is calculated at .80 transmission ratio
California has its problems, but when people knock it I ask them, "How many acres of legal off-roading parks has your state set up and funded?"
Been here 39 years and I love it.
Thanks everyone. I'll try to air up the tire. Even if it leaks as is, if I can get it to 50 PSI I should be able to see if it returns to its original shape.
If the tire remains deformed, I won't use it. I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish.
Thanks,
Matt
Great story. I always head to the DMV office in the smallest town I can find within reasonable driving distance. The employees seem less hassled that their big city co-workers. I had to register my M416 trailer (brought to the DMV behind a M1009). The guy that came out to verify the numbers...
