It sounds like there was a lack of a pre-trip inspection and planing.

Here in Michigan you have 48 hours from time of purchess to drive a vehicle home on the directest route without proper plates , no other driving.

GL can't give you a SF-97 prior to you being APPROVED for your EUC , until you are approved they can't sell you the truck per government regulations. The EUC allows for transfer of ownership so this must be done prior to the SF-97 with transfers ownership to you. It's not GL it's the government...
