Properly rebuilding a Jeep steering gear requires a special ream to get the sector shaft bearing clearance right. Too much and you get wobble and play. I say this because my suggestion to you is throw your mismatch gear in the recycle pile and get a reman unit from one of the Jeep parts guys.
On my 915 the interaxle differential applies power to both axles all the time until I lock it in, that eliminates the differential action between the axles and full traction goes to both axles.

These mechanics in these out of the way places can fix broken stuff with a car battery jumper cables and a coathanger welding rod. I would send over the exploded view of the transmission from the parts manual (available on this site) and have him circle what he needs.
Cheaper would be for your bush mechanic to tell you what parts he needs so he can fix the transmission under a tree! I see the clutch pack is all disassembled. Is that the problem?
