The gray wire goes to the center stud of the light socket and the black wire goes to the outer ring of the socket as the ground. that would NOT effect the problem you are having. That much I do know.

Are you checking if voltage is passing thru the firewall mounted relay and to the glow plugs? It is just that simple. Use a test lamp or a voltage meter. Report back.
I have never heard of such a thing. I never had a problem putting them in. It was getting them out that was a challenge at times. A little grease on the threads and right in. No problem.
On the same note. Oil and grease can do wonders on a window regulator. I have had them locked up and was able to revive many of them with a little motor oil and some chassis grease in the sash channels. Worth a try.
