If I read the original question correctly, it is which of the two 383 patterns is most preferred, the early or late ("complete repaint" as described in the manual) as illustrated below.
My vote is late pattern.
Cheers
Pic 1- Early pattern on my "Pigpen". It is due for a repaint.
Pic 2- Late...
If you want the paper -10s for the M920, Milman61 on Ebay had them NOS last I checked.
I'm old fashioned, I always like to have a paper copy of the manual in the truck with me..
Cheers
Can some of you fellas who have actually used the different types of replacements give the rest of us some more details? Sure would be appreciated, and help make decisions on what to get for our different needs.
For example, I imagine the complete dash replacement would hook up like the...
I picked up a metal operators manual cover at the Little Rock MVPA convention a couple of years ago. I had originally planned to put it in the XM704 one day, but when I found it recently I decided it would look pretty good in the V.
Since my original manual looks a bit grotty now after some...
Since it will take a small eternity for Sarge to get around to answering you, and since I was there, I will audaciously answer for him.
Colour codes are Green 34094, brown 30051, and black 37030.
Sarge is alive and well, he has just been busy putting up his little tool shed recently. It is a...
Thanks!
Getting it running, and running well are proving to be two different things... :-?
The temperature issue proved to be the gauge (doh!), replaced it and the sending unit. Temp at idle is good, goes down some while driving, so all is as it should be there.
Shifting is almost tweaked...
As Gunboy said, it is in TB 43-0209, which covers the 383 3-colour camo patterns and painting. There are two patterns for the 1009, the early, and the complete repaint (better "more scientific" camo pattern).
Manuals are under Resources on the old SS site, which can be reached through the link...
Justin, I will give him a shout and your phone number (assuming that is what is under your name??). His name is Wayne. Nice guy, and the Ferret is in great shape.
I believe he mentioned that having very long, skinny (but strong) arms with 14 joints would be handy when working on these!
Cheers
Since you ask- I vote MERDC Winter (the green/field drab/tan/black) as that is what is on it, so it is historically correct for that vehicle.
Besides that, I like the colour scheme since that is how they were painted during most of my Marine time.
Cheers
The airsoft M60s mentioned are really nice, are quite strong, and a big surprise at the price. That is saying something coming from an old M60 gunner!
They do look a bit better after judicious application of steel wool to wear the paint off the high points. Look at the pictures Q'hut...
On page 8 of James Lyles' Vietnam gun truck book The Hard Ride, he states that they based the 2.5t gun-trucks on all the M35 versions including the M35A2C drop-side vehicles, so it is accurate!
Congrats on a great project. A buddy of mine, Quonsethut, has built a gun truck and did a splendid...
A note on government (FS, or Federal Standard) paint codes would be appropriate here-
The first number indicates the 'shininess' as in 14087 is gloss, 24087 is semi-gloss, and 34087 is flat, all the same shade of OD.
The second number, 4, indicates that it is a green.
The last three numbers...
Brakes and tires- both must be in good shape or we shouldn't go on the road. We should never risk anyone's life on these items, and with the parts/tires readily available, there is no excuse for doing so.
Apart from the moral obligation (which should be enough), as mentioned by Scooter there...
Thanks for the input gents!
I'll PM Todd and see what he says.
From the contacts, I imagine they used some proprietary type battery which is no doubt impossible to find and/or viciously expensive. There is room for a lantern type battery, or something similar. I'll let you know if its a...

Thanks, and cheers.
Bump to get a few more views.
If I can't find out the proper stuff to make it work, I will rewire it to common batteries. It would be a nice accessory at shows.
Cheers
That was a great weekend! It was cool having that truck in my mirror on the convoy back to Austin.
Y'all should see this truck up close to really appreciate just how much work Ed put into making it all right.
Cheers

The French used the 'standard' German style 404.1, but also had a slightly shorter wheelbase version. If you have one of those, that would be very cool and quite rare over here. Standard wheelbase is 114", don't recall what the short version was.
The attached picture is the French 'shorty', I...
