It was bound to happen... the neighbors got a quick preview...

I went to Salt Lake City and picked up my second M1009. Since it came to Salina, my buddy from Boulder has been driving it and staying out at the lake. He came to town Monday evening and we went out to eat, yesterday for a few minutes, they were both in my driveway. I was surprised at how close...

    Lift pump

If you can find somebody to bump the starter for you, push on the end of that pushrod in the block to make sure the cam lobe is not in the pumping position. It will make your pump installation much eaier. I found a 1/4" drive ratchet works pretty good for the bolts. Glen

    CUCV...good idea for college student?

The have the straight front axle, it is not the Dana 60 that the pickups enjoy, but a corporate GM. It would be the same as the half ton Chevrolet pickups of the period. Glen

    Fuel Economy

The truck in your avatar has 4.56 gears and in my opinion, you are correct, 55 mph is humming. The M1009 or Blazers had 3.08 gears and 65 is a good speed for them. Glen

    engine noise level?

I had my son fire up two of my three today while I shot some video. I just had him back out into the street, then pull back into the driveway. The M1009 is the loudest engine of any CUCV I have been around, this particular M1008 is at the other end of the scale, the quietest cold 6.2 I have been...

Drive CUCV off the GL/DRMO yard????

I see we were typing bascially the same thing at the same time, I just had to wait on photos. Good advice, haul it if you can, but there is nothing wrong with a tow rope or driving if it has brakes. In the above photos, you can see a tag on the pickup, nothing on the Blazer. Glen

Drive CUCV off the GL/DRMO yard????

What happens is they pick up the trucks and move them around with a fork lift. We are not talking about a ding, we are talking about a genuine bend in the drive tube between the U joints. It will be obvious, stick you head in there and look at it. If it is bent that bad, you will know right...

Drive CUCV off the GL/DRMO yard????

If the driveshaft is your only real issue, pull it and drive on the front end. It will not hurt a thing. It would be much better than trying to limp home on a bent rear one. My transportation fell through, so I called Jefferson CIty and asked if my M1009 was hauled or driven in. He said they...

    When parting out an M1009...

I would think engine, front axle, transmission, transfer case, rear axle, in that order, providing all is good. The rest of the small stuff will add up, but those should be the big ticket items.

width from tire to tire of m1028

The locking hubs stick out beyond the tires, you may have to plank your way past the fenders.

Normal for my rear axle to be locked?

Anything under acceleration on a Detroit Locker in a tight turn should cause it to lock. They are set up so one wheel can coast faster than the driven wheel, but the driven wheel cannot spin faster than the coasting wheel, if that makes sense. They normally are quite harsh when they lock up...

Salt Lake City M1009 Recovery 03-19-2010

What does your M1009 need? Starting seems to be the toughest part.. A rest area in Western Kansas.... make that two rest areas... and the Kansas State Line...

    m1008 good for high school?

My son has semi-stolen mine and has been driving it to school. He prefers it over his Saturn, not that I blame him. He says it has a cool factor that nobody else in school has. He prefers the pickup over the Blazer as well, he even drives it to visit his mother, rather than take a faster...

    920 miles in a CUCV 2 days!

I put it all in there, sensors, computer components, even used the fuel pump and adapted my sending unit to the pump in the Blazer tank. It was a fun truck, I just hope somebody is still enjoying it. I have not seen it for maybe 15 years.

    920 miles in a CUCV 2 days!

My 77 had a really nicely done sheet of plywood with a padded carpeting on it. It came right up to the footwells and was cleanly cut around the fenderwells. I wish I could take credit for that part, but it was somebody else's handy work. I was responsible for the Corvette power transplant. It...

    Fuel Economy

Be sure to share the results! I am anxious to see how this M1009 will do on straight #2 diesel fuel. We are still getting premium or winter blended fuels here in Kansas. Normally they do a little better on #2 fuel.

    920 miles in a CUCV 2 days!

Napping in my newest M1009 would be pretty eay as it has no back seat. I had a 2wd Blazer I used to pull my bass boat with and I used to sleep on a pad in the back at the boat ramps all the time. I waited out many Kansas Thunderstorms in the back of that old Blazer on a boat ramp...

    Fuel Economy

My old M1008 would break 20 if you stayed under 50 mph, the one I have now will not do it. My newest M1009 runs over 20 fairly easily, even pulling the grades through the Rockies. I ran it 65 or close to it all the way home. Slow acceleration rates, easy on the fuel pedal and patience. I let off...

    Fuel Economy

The M1009 I just picked up in Salt Lake City ran around 22 mpg for the 1016 miles trip home. Running around the backroads and town since then, it just broke 20 mpg. My other M1009 runs around 17, now I need to figure out why. My M1008 actually is better on fuel than my first M1009. Glen
